Soccer team splits
two, record now 2-4
Two-game winning streak ends at home
against St. John Fisher
by Stephen Jason
Collegian Staff Writer
The Bohrend men's soccer team
gave what head coach Herb
Lauffer called "Their- best
defensive effort of the season" for
88 minutes at home on Saturday
against St. John's Fisher.
Unfortunately, a soccer game is
played for 90 minutes and for a
little over a minute the Lions (2-
4) relaxed, resulting in mental
breakdowns which proved costly
in a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals (3-
4-1).
Senior mid-fielder, Mike
Mihalke gave Behrend an early
lead with 37:14 left in the first
half. The Cardinals had coughed
up a loose ball to Sophomore
forward Erik Filoon, who fed
Mihalke for the assist.
However, this lead was short
lived as St. John Fisher's Scan
Leahy was left unmarked on a
long corner kick and converted a
header from Jason Hude at 21:29
of the first half.
Only a minute and 17 seconds
later, Charles Robbins converted
a loose ball from right in front

on Friday. Singles winners were

Group disturbed by
dog's presence at dance
(continued from page 2)
According to Sanders, there
were empty beer cans in the area
and that a warning was issued and
the group was dispersed.
The dance went on as planned
and there were no problems inside
the building. However, there were
some violations in the Reed
Parking Lot involving underage
drinking and open containers.
Police and Safety were there to
break up any confrontations but
not to make arrests.
Dean of Student Services Chris
Reber stated that he is unaware of
any other time when a dog was
used in a situation like this.
"It - was the police officer's
own personal choice," said Reber.
after Tom Basel stole it from a
Behrend full back to give the
Cardinals the only cushion they
would need in the cold, wet, and
windy conditions.
Ken Gronholm once again
played well for the Lions as he
faced 9 shots, many of which
were from point blank range.
Gronholm and• the Lions were
fresh off a 1-0 shutout of Geneva
on September 20.
Mihalke once again tallied the
Lions lone goal from in tight on
an assist from senior full back
Jay Varcoe.
Gronholm stopped all 8 shots
that the Golden Tornadoes had to
offer giving him his second
consecutive shutout_
The Lions will now have to
focus on todays home match
against Buffalo State at 4:00.
"We can't look back because
every team on our schedule is too
good for us to not be properly
prepared," said Laufrer.
Michel (6-2, 6-4), Steffani
Rasche (6-1, 6-1), Victoria Rice
(6-3, 6-3), and Colleen Holzer (6-
2, 6-1).
In doubles, the Lady Lions
swept all three matches. Winners
were the teams of Clark-Erika
Lloyd (6-0, 6-1), Michel-Rasche
(6-3, 6-1), and Rice-Holzer (6-1,
6-2).
On Saturday, Behrcnd traveled
to Geneva College, falling short
of a victory by a 3-6 score.
He• added that, in retrospect,
perhaps it was not a good
decision.
. Randy Hoffman, Manager of
Police and Safety, said that the
dog was more of a show than
anything else. "It was for his
(Sanders') own personal
protection," said Hoffman.
Marcus Garvey Glover, a
member of ABC, attended the
dance and witnessed Sanders
patrolling with the dog. He said
that an incident of this nature
"could be construed as an overt act
of racism".
The dog is Sanders' own. It is
trained in handler protection and
obedience. The dog is not a
certified K-9 dog and it is not
insured.

Geneva last week.
Winners in singles for the Lady
Lions were Lloyd (6-1, 7-6) and
Holzer (7-6, 6-4). The team of
Michel-Rasche was the only
winner in doubles for Behrend.
About the Geneva match,
Coach Mike Grignol said, "We
looked a little tired" and "We
weren't playing up to our
capability."

match is this Thursday against
