The Collegian Wednesday, September 27, 1989 Entertainment Finding good music at the Nice Price by Rob Farnham Collegian Staff Writer You know the scenario: You're tired of listening, to the same albums over and over again, and Rocket 101's playlist just doesn't fry your burger. But the recent releases you seek at the Millcreek Mall are out of the price range of an impoverished college student such as yourself. You need tunes, but where can you find good stuff you can actually afford? - -Allow me to direct you to the bargain bins in the Mall's record stores, in which you can find a number of good-to-excellent recordings at prices substantially lower than regular retail, typically ranging from $3.99 to $6.99, depending on the store. Below are brief assessments of some of the more promising titles available in the discount displays as of this past Saturday. Speaking in Tongues - Talking Heads An exceptionally danceable assemblage of odd world-beat polyrhythms, quirky keyboard and guitar riffs, and David Byrne's eternally skewed lyrics. The cassette version of this album contains extended mixes of five tracks, mixes not available on the LP or CD. Best cuts include the hit "Burning Down the House," "Moon Rocks," and the long version, of "Girlfriend Is Better." For Those About To Rock We Salute You - AC/DC Just about everyone ought to own at least one AC/DC album (although owning more than five may well be a sign of arrested development), for those days when nothing but loud, obvious, riffs and crude, rude, lyric sentiments will do. This one, the legendary • Back' In Black notwithstanding, would be an excellent_ choice. The Young brothers' combined hollow-and solid-body electric-guitar sounds are in fine blues-rock form on hormonal-overload anthems like "Let's Get It Up" and "Inject the Venom," and even rock critics The Collegian is now accepting applications from students interested in serving as Collegian editor for spring of 1990. Interested persons should apply immediately by placing letters of interest in The Collegian mailbox. Letters should include information about your past experience as well as a detailed explanation of your personal philosophy of running a student said nice things about "Spellbound"'s knowing portrayal of adolescent frustration. - Live : Under A Blood Red Sky - U 2 This eight-song cassette, recorded ' on the 'B3 War tour, is only 32 minutes long, but the band's performances are so sharp- and intense that it doesn't seem like a ripoff. Atmospheric and rock solid, passionate and focused, this is .U 2 at its best, before Bono stopped washing his hair and the Edge took to wearing dumb hats. All eight cuts are good, but the live versions of I he Penn . State-Erie Office Of 'olice And Safety Is Pleased o Announce The Availabilit If An On Campus Escort , ervice. Fire of Unknown Origin - Blue Oyster Cult Big, sometimes pompous techno rock distinguished by a science fiction/ gothic horror sensibility and, more, significantly, by Donald "Buck Dharma" Rocscr's high-intensity lead guitars. Fans of Anne Rice's novels will approve of the vampire romance of "After Dark," and the alternately sweet and sinister "Burning For You" was a terrific single, 8.0.C.'s best since "(Don't Fear) the Reaper."
