The JRC office is now open for questions, complaints,
and comments from all resident students. The office is
located next to the Lawrence Hall lobby and is open from
10 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday. The JRC
office number is 898-6297.
Jewish students on campus interested in attending
holiday services this weekend should contact Professor
Ken Halperin at 898-6471 or Darrell Freund at 898-020
by Thursday.
Attention Graduating Seniors. Graduation will be
held on Saturday, January 6, 1990 at 1:00 pm in Erie
Hall (snow date is January 7). Keepsake caps and
gowns are priced at $14.00 and must be ordered from
the Bookstore no later than Friday, November 10, 1989.
On Thursday, September 28, 1989, there is a
mandatory meeting for all club treasurers. It will be held
in Reed 117, at 5:30 pm. If you have any questions,
contact David Mahoney at 898-6452.
Students Services is sponsoring aluminum can
recycling which will be conducted by the Veteran's Club
and the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. Collection drums are
placed at various places around campus. Proceeds
benefit charity and community events.
There will be a Ski Club meeting on September 28 at
8:00 pm in reed 117.
WPSE Radio Club meetings are held every
Wednesday in Reed 116 at 4:00 pm. Anyone may attend
the meeting.
The second program of the 1989-90 Speaker Series,
"The Bush Report Card", will feature a debate between
Morton Kondracke, senior editor of The New Republic,
and William Rusher, publisher of The National Review.
The debate will be held in Erie Hall, Saturday, October 7
at 8:00 pm and will consider the performance of the
Bush administration to date.
There is a limited amount of residence hall space
available immediately for men. Anyone interested should
contact the Housing Office in Dobbins Hall or call 898-
6161. These spaces will be assigned on a first-come,
first-served basis.

Bryce Jordan announces plans
to step down as PSU president

Jordan announced his retirement
Friday eliciting praise of his
tenure and sparking a search to
choose his successor.
Before a packed University
Board of Trustees meeting in the
Keller Conference Center, Jordan
- who turns 65 Thursday - said
simply, "I plan to retire as
president of Penn State, close of
business, on Aug. 31, 1990.
Thank you very much." And he
returned to his seat.
Jordan was given a standing
ovation in deference to his
accomplishments.

administrator.

The Association of Black
Collegians is asking for an
explanation from Police and
Safety in regards to why a police
dog was used during a recent ABC
sponsored dance.
The dance was held in the
Wintergreen Cafe on September 8,
and ran from 8 pm to 2 am. The
entire Erie community was invited
and music was provided by
"Chilly J."
Rommel Taylor, President of
The ABC, requested that Police
and Safety make a few extra
rounds because of the number of
people there and the large amount
of money being handled.
Towards the conclusion of the
dance, Police and Safety Officer
Thomas Sanders was seen

presidents, but it is my point of
view that history will show and
list Dr. Jordan among the greatest

Jordan did not offer a specific
reason for the timing of his
announcment, but University
policy stipulates that certain
employees - including the
president - retire by June 30
following their 65th birthday.
Trustees could have easily waived
the requirement had Jordan wished
to continue as president.
Trustee Obie Snider, past
president of the board, expressed
remorse over Jordan's departure.
"We all knew that this
moment was inevitable.
However, we meet it with
extreme reluctance, Bryce,"
hand for the event which was held
September 22.
SGA President Stan
Washington suggested the need
for greater campus diversity.
Lilley noted a clearer
perception will enable everyone
on campus to unite and bring
forth greater leadership.
"We need to be tougher on
each other, yet more
compassionate," said Lilley,
paraphrasing recent speaker David
Gergen.
Other points of discussion
included the following:

When asked, Sanders said that
he made a judgement call to bring
the dog on campus. "It(the dog)
was a controlling factor," said
Sanders. "It prevented us from
losing control of the situation."
Sanders said that there was an
incident earlier in the night in the

a level of distinction . . . Your
energy and your hard work are
just beyond our comprehension,"
he said.

The search committee, which
will consist of members of the
University community, will
gather information about the
applicants but will not intervene
by contacting them. Instead, the
search committee will assemble
information about the applicants
and submit a list of the five to 10
top contenders by March 1.
