FIG weekend is used to acquaint cadets with Army life and train them not only in things such as land navigation and M-16 rifle firing, but also in leadership. All Penn State campuses with ROTC programs attend this yearly event. After an eight hour drive, the junior cadets put on their ruck sacks and went to the begin a weekend of tactical training to prepare them for summer camp. The freshman and sophomore cadets got their duffels and were taken to barracks. They put on their Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs) and went to pick up one Army Meal Ready to Eat (MRE), and get linens to make up their bunks. The cadets were given classes on night land navigation, the assembly and disassembly of the M-16, and firing techniques for this weapon. Services will be held each Sunday from 3-4 pm in the Reed 117. The services are sponsored by Behrend Campus Ministry. "We have been working out the details for these services since 1987 fall semester," said Campus Ministry Board President Pastor Ray Sines. "Rev. Ronald Garrett, Pastor of the Messiah Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry Board Treasurer, and I began with a Protestant worship survey to see how many Behrend students would be interested in an on campus service." All the Protestant pastors on the Campus Ministry Board have volunteered to conduct the services on a rotational basis. These ministers are Rev. Charles Case, Pastor of Wesleyville Baptist Church; Rev. Ronald Garrett, Pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church (Wesleyville); Rev. Ray Sines, Pastor or the Erie Church of God (Brown Ave.); and Rev. Gerald Schmidt, Pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church. The Campus Ministry pastors welcome students to participate in the services. The first site the cadets went to that morning was the Rappelling Tower, which was run by members of Behrend's ROTC program. After rappelling demonstrations and instruction on tying a rappell seat, the cadets were sent up the tower to try their courage on bot Plow and high lanes. After this exciting start to the morning, the cadets were next sent to an urban warfare training site. The cadets were issued M -16's and blank ammunition, then traveled through the site to fight Behrend Campus Ministry was started by the Messiah Lutheran Church of Wesleyville in 1981 as an evangelical outreach to Behrend students. After a night patrol they came back to rest and clean weapons. Up early again on Sunday, the cadets got a hot breakfast and went to the helicopter orientation site.
