This past January two
students from Behrend were
recognized for their outstanding
acting abilities. Two
representatives from the
American College Theater
Festival (ACTF) attended last
semesters production of "The
Diviners." The representatives
nominated Tom Barra, a second
semester sophomore majoring in
creative writing, and Monique
Midgette, a second semester
freshman for the Irene Ryan
Acting Awards (Irene Ryan
portrayed Granny in "The Beverly
Hillbillies").
The Two representatives for
ACTF- came from the Arena
Stage in Buffalo and from
Carnegie Mellon University. The
ACilt- reviewed between 150-200
plays at various colleges.
Tom and Monique traveled to
the State University on New
York in Binghamton to compete
for the' individual awards. They
were required to prepare one scene
with a person of their choice.
Tom chose to do a scene from
"Orphans" with Rob Fox (star of
"Marriage of Bette and Boo"). A
second requirement was the
performance of a monologue.
Tom's selection was from the
play "Key Exchange" written by
Kevin Wade.
Monique did her scene from
"Did You Ever Go to P.S. 43?"
with fellow Behrend actor Bill
Gibbard. Instead of a monologue,
Monique chose to do a solo
singing "Amazing Grace."
Although they did not win, the
nomination was an honor in
itself. "Tom and Monique both
got very good marks and their
critique was excellent,"
commented their director Steve
Buckwald.
When asked about his
nomination and trip to New
York, Tom explained, "It was
worthwhile because you see the

The 1989 edition of the
Behrend literary magazine
Tempus, featuring poetry and
short fiction by Penn State
Behrend students as well
.as the
winners of the recent Sonnenberg
Poetry Contest, is now available.
The magazine, priced at two
dollars, is published yearly, and
and other individual actors. It was
a good learning experience." As
for acting in Behrend plays in the
next few years, "I will probably
will, but it does take a lot of
your time and energy."
Tom is very pleased to work
with Behrend's new theater
director, Mr. Steve Buckwald.
Tom commented, "He is a very
good director, very demanding,
but he gets results."
Tom began acting at age
eleven in a Manhattan Theater
Workshop. "We worked for
fifteen weeks every Saturday all
day, and then put on a play." He
continued to act in high school
because "it was just fun to do."
As for a future in acting, Tom
said he would pursue it part-time
or as a hobby.
Monique is presently the
President of Matchbox Theater
Guild, an acting club here at
Behrend. She began here acting
career at age nine. She was in the
chorus all through high school
and as a senior she assistant
directed the play "Brighton Beach
Memoirs."
In the future Monique plans to
pursue her singing career and
possibly acting or directing. She
enjoyed here experience at the
contest, "It was great! I got to
meet and spend time with people
in established theater
departments. They had a lot of
good workshops and sessions on
acting in general? Monique also
enjoys working with Mr.
Buckwald. "Steve's an interesting
man who really knows his stuff."
You can see Tom and
Monique in Behrend's
current production of
"Lovers, Winners, and
Losers" which is playing
April 18-23. Tickets are

portraying Joseph Brennan
and Monique will appear as
Cissy Cassidy in a play

according to Publicity Director
Kurt Kaletka, is sold at far less
than cost. "We really just want to
promote the work. The point is
to get students interested in
writing, not to turn a profit."
The Sonnenberg competition
offers, among other things,
publication in Tempus and this
year's edition features pieces by
contest winners Kim Krynock,
Ellen Goldberg, and Susan
Lavery.
Dear Louanne,
I don't have a question. It's more
like a statement. I'm sick and tired of
double standards.
What ever happened to women's lib?
I enjoy sex as much as the next guy (I
happen to be a girl), but it seems girls
have to sleep with one guy at a time or
they get a bad reputation. Not the
guys! They get extra points. But there's
a difference between girls they "date"
and girls they take home to meet Mom
(if you know what I mean).
I believe there's nothing wrong with
one night stands if both understand the
rules. Sex can be just for fun. I wish
guys wouldn't deceive girls with
promises of a relationship when they
don't mean it.

Some guys even try to buy sex with
material things. I admit that some girls
will sell themselves out for a fraternity
jacket or a car. Last of all why can't
guys keep quiet? They brag about their
conquests! Sex is a private affair.

own. Sex without committment is frowned upon
by most women and probably a good many men,
but what really matters is how you feel about
yourself the morning after. Each person needs to
live by shier own set of values and morals so
long as they don't hurt others. There are three
reasons to have sex: to have fun, to share love
and committment, and to make babies. You're
right, to deceive your partner about your motives
is immoral. Unfortunately I think some women
deceive themselves. They think they can enjoy
one night stands but are devastated when they
never hear from the guy again. You have to be
honest with yourself.
Some other things I thind are immoral: I
think it's wrong to deceive your partner. Be
honest about whether or not you are interested in
a relationship or committmenL I think it's wrong
to bring an unwanted child into the world. I think
it's wrong to carelessly transmit sexual disease. I
think it's wrong to have sex for non-sexual
reasons (material things, power, and status).
Finally, it's intolerable to force someone to do
something against their will or to take advantage
of them when they're incapacitated (drunk).
