door and then the sound would
slowly die down again. What's
his father going, to do with that
wheelchair?
Brian was beating his illness.
He was part of the "normal"
community, his friends could
walk, and run, and play sports.
And Brian was able to overcome
the borders and-limitations .of his
condition. The year I graduated
"HOW I MADE $lB,OOO
FOR COLLEGE
BY WORKING WEEKENDS."
When my friends and I graduated
from high school, we all took paTt-time
jobs to pay for college.
They ended up in car washes and
hamburger joints, putting in long hours
for little pay.
Not me. My job takes just one
weekend a month and two weeks a year.
Yet, I'm earning $lB,OOO for college.
Because I joined my local Army
National Guard.
They're the people who help our
state during emergencies like hurri
canes and floods. They're also an
important part of our country's military
defense.
So, since I'm helping them do such
an important job, they're helping me
make it through school.
a Friend Never Seems Fair...contd. from Page 4
Brian ran for Vice President of
his class. He won.
Brian was always positive.
He probably had pveryday teenage
problems, probably had a crush
on some girl, wanted the Eagles
to to to the Super Bowl, and the
Flyers to finally win the
playoffs. He didn't let the disease
control his life.
So what's the sense in having
Army National Guard

him die?
The older I get, the harder it is
Pete's Pers
to actually believe all the nice
things they told me about my
God. I guess there is some kind
of deity out there, some sort of
controlling force; I can't picture
all of us being the result of a
freak accident of nature. But why
is he doing the things He does?
All the misery and pain he, puts
us through, just to test our faith?
Brian's father is a very
religious man. He is very active
in his church and is a respected
member of his congregation. Isn't
As soon as I finished Advanced
Training, the Guard gave me a cash
bonus of $2,000. I'm also getting
another $5,000 for tuition and books,
thanks to the New GI Bill.
Not to mention my monthly Army
Guard paychecks. They'll add up to
more than $ll,OOO over the six years
I'm in the Guard.
And if I take out a college loan, the
Guard will help me pay it back—up to
$1,500 a year, plus interest.
It all adds up to $lB,OOO —or more
—for college for just a little of my time.
And that's a heck of a better deal than
any car wash will give you.
THE GUARD CAN HELP PUT
YOU THROUGH COLLEGE, TOO.

it ironic that his strong belief in
the institution which took his
son will help him
_pull through
.this misery? I don't mean to
ridicule religion.
I guess deep down I will
never stop believing in the God
whose actions I now question;
but if these are the "mysterious
ways" He works in to test our
faith - I just wish he'd cut it out.
