The Collegian Wednesday, March 22 US-Canada Volleyball Showdown Serving Up Tennis by John Musser Collegian Staff Writer The 1989 Behrend Men's Tennis team, coached by Michael Grignol, should have no problem in improving over last year's team. "We had one win last year", said coach Grignol. Grignol was quick to point out that the Lion netters played a tough schedule, which also happens to be the case this year, and lacked talent after the top two players. However, don't expect a repeat of last years dismal season. Grignol anticipates a brighter season on the court. "We should have an interesting season this year. We have some good players." This years roster includes Chris Benton, Rick Brooks, Shawn Crago, Todd Hiller, David Hogle, Robert Jackson, Chuck Keenan, Steve Moyer, Karl Pearson, Erich Sanchack, Bill Schmitt, and Steven Smith. What is the major difference between this years team and 'BB's? The addition of three freshman who have come on to take over three of the four top spots on the team. "Crago was our number one player last year. This year - he's number two," Grignol. This years number one player is Bill Schmitt. "Bill has a good head for tennis. He can do all of it. He can play baseline, he can serve and volley, and he has great touch at the net." Coach Grignol also added that Schmitt "uses what he needs in a match." Grignol isn't the only one who thinks highly of Schmitt, a player who is technically sound and has the best tennis skills on the team. The Allegheny Mountain Tennis Association ranks Schmitt fourth in singles while the Middle States Tennis Association ranks him as the top doubles player. Crago is a hard hitter who plays hard. He is most effective in doubles and will be paired with Schmitt, a combination that should almost guarantee Behrend at least one doubles victory every match. Keenan is a mentally tough player who uses alot of topspin to keep his opponents off balance. Hiller and Sanchack have similar playing styles, featuring good serves and strong forehands. The two other doubles teams will be comprised of Keenan and Sanchak on the number two team, while Hiller will be teamed with either Benton, Smith, or Hogle. Grignol is pleased with the progress of his team so far and likes the fact that his players have shown an ability to stay in matches. This mental toughness A crowd of more than 3000 packed Gannon's Hamermill Center to watch the United States men's volleyball team defeat Canada in straight games - 16-14,15-11 and 15-13. Bob Ctvrtlik was credited with 27 kills, two. blocks and an ace. Mark Arnold accumulated 17 kills and Troy Tanner 14 kills and four blocks. Canada held leads in all three contests before succumbing to the U.S. squad. Canada watched the U.S. score four straight points to - take the 16-14 decision. The U.S. then took six of the last seven points in the second game and seven of the last ten in the third. to "keep cool under fire" will help keep matches close and possibly even win them a few. Despite this influx of new talent, their is a lack of talent after the top four or five players on the team that could hinder their chances against stronger teams. An overall lack of team experience in playing tournament matches may also cause problems for the young Lions. As for the arduous schedule, Grignol is positive but also realistic. "We should be able to compete with the teams we play this year." Grignol also feels that the team will be entertaining and feels that the fans should see "some good tennis" this year. The strong schedule started with a road match at Mount Union Monday afternoon. Schmitt and Sanchak were involved in four of the five points as Behrend topped Mount Union 5-4. Schmitt crushed Union's Joe Massaro (6-0, 6-0) and teamed with Crago to defeat Massaro and Marty Vah (6-2, 6-0). Sanchak defeated Christian Stull (6-2, 6-4), then downed Casey Wagner-Kevin Kurey (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) with Keenan. Other winners were Smith in singles (6-2, 6-3) over Todd Surbey and, in an exhibition match, Hogle-Smith defeated (7-6, 5-7, 6-1) Surbey-Cunt'. Martial Arts Championship Robert Mandura was the overall winner in the Goshin Jutsu Kyo JuJo Grand Championship held at Behrend. The thirty-nine year old Madura accomplished this feat by placing in the self defense, Kata and Kumite categories. The title is Mandura's first. Kathy Gude was the grand overall female champion. She placed second in self defense, third in weapons and fourth in fighting. Gude competed in the 13-15 year old age division. Members of the Erie Fighting Academy and the King Cobra Karate Club participated in the event also. "Call on us for All Ph. (814) 455-2551 your Fraternity & 115 West 9th Stree Sorority Needs !!!"
