Two Behrend
Poets Honored

promised, here 'is the
feature on Ellen Goldberg
and Susan Lavrey. They
are second• and third prize
winners, respectively, of
first annual
Sonnenberg Poetry Award.
The award is given
annually to a Behrend
student in honor of
Kenneth Sonnenberg a
1985 graduate of Behrend.
Kim Krynock, the first
place winner, was featured
in last weeks edition.
While enjoying the sun and
sand of Florida over Christmas
break, Philadelphia native Ellen
Goldberg was notified of her
second place finish in the
Sonnenberg poetry award in the
Sonnenberg poetry award by her
teacher . and friend, Dr. Diana
Hume George. A - senior
psychology major at Behrend
who is minoring in English, Ms.
Goldbetg was very excited
because the Sonnenberg Poetry
Award is not just any award -- it
is a very authentic and
prestigious one.

Prompted by the U.S.
Supreme Court's decision to rule
in a case that could make
abortions illegal, rallies for and
against abortion have broken out
on a number of campuses in
recent weeks, and both sides say
they will, step up efforts to recruit
more students to walk their
picket lines,
Students at Stephens College
in Missouri, lowa State, Yale and
Western Michigan Universities
and the Universities of Houston,
Washington, Texas and Illinois,
to name a few, have rallied for
and against abortion in recent
weeks with an intensity unusual
even for this issue.
Organizers predict more
campus efforts will come as the
term rolls on, and the Supreme
Court's decision:-due this spring--
approaches.
In early January, the court
agreed to rule on a Missouri law
that limits abortions in that state.
If the court rules the law is

the Self," and "The Father
Reach," the judge and Pulitzer
Prize-winning author, Maxine
Kumin found "The Pregnant
Receivance" to be most
outstanding. Ms. Goldberg is -
pleased with the choice but feels
the poem she had hoped would
win did not because she changed
the form to meet contest
requirements, and the different
form left the poem with a
slightly different feel. After
writing for many years, Ms.
Goldberg feels most of her
inspiration comes from inside.
After graduating from Penn"
State, Ms. Goldberg is going on
to graduate school to study
clinical psychology. She is not
sure what school she will attend.
She has applied to eight different
graduate programs. As far as
possible career moves, Ms.
Goldberg is very flexible and
would like to integrate research,
teaching and = couzseling. A
University position is a
possibility.
Ms. Goldberg is very happy
with her choice to spend all four
undergraduate years at Behrend. It
was a big choice for her, as well
as one that took much
constitutional, it would
effectively alter or even overturn
its landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade
decision, which stopped states
from passing laws restricting
women from obtaining abortions.
The National Abortion Rights
Action League (NARAL), a
nationwide pro-choice group, and
the National Organization for
Women (NOW), have long
"ignored campuses," admits
NARAL's campus coordinator
-Mary Wilder, who. now - says,
"It's time to focus on them
again."
NARAL and NOW already
have pro-choice groups on about
55 campuses, Wilder said, and
hope to mobilize students at 400
schools in upcoming weeks.
Then they will try to draw
"hundreds of thousands" of
supporters to Washington, D.C.,
in April to support abortion, she
said, to counter the large pro-life
actions held in January.
Since the Supreme Court
bases its decisions on the
Constitution, common law, case
law and previous rulings, it's

consideration. Many of her
professors helped her with her
decision to stay. She feels that
she has gotten a good,
personalized education here at
Behrend.
Future poetry contests are
probable for Ms. Goldberg. She
has been writing for many years
and has a strong desire to
continue, - ;
The third prize winner was
Buffalo native Susan Lavrey. Ms.
Lavrey is a junior English major
at Behrend, She was very happy
and quite honored to win 3rd prize
in the Sonnenberg Poetry award.
Based on Ms. Lavrey's three
much less susceptible to public
opinion than Congress or the
president. "Unfortunately, you
can't picket the Supreme Court,"
said Rothman.
Yet, Wilder says, "If we can
convince the court there will be a
lot of confusion in American
society if they overturn Roe vs:
Wade, they may act less
drastically."
Pro-life activists, too, are
recruiting students to pressure the
court--and sway public opinion--
to limit or criminalize abortion.
"We think there should be
alternatives to abortion," said Joe
Pojman, a University of Texas
grad student who is the group's
president. "No woman should
need to have-an abortion because
there are no alternatives."
The Missouri law which has
led to the • renewed abortion
controversy states that human life
begins at conception, bans public
facilities from performing
abortions, and requires pregnant
women to undergo tests to
