Page 10 McKeesport Campus Similar to Behrend by Traci Fenton Collegian Staff Writer Penn State Behrend has a number of students who began their studies at the commonwealth campus in McKeesport. McKeesport is one out of the seventeen Penn State branch campuses that offers two year associate degrees and a two year start for baccalaureate degrees. The McKeesport campus is located approximately twenty minutes south of Pittsburgh and has close to 2,000 students. Unlike Behrend, McKeesport has only one resident hall and the remaining students are commuters. Mark Schnabel is currently a senior at Behrend who is adding on to his associate degree with a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Mark Schnabel got his start - at McKeesport and one big difference he pointed out is the weather. Everyone knows Erie is famous for rain and snow. According to Mark, that recognition is not unfounded. What issues or queStions would you like to see in Campus Voice? Although we have had it easy this winter, McKeesport, safely away from the weather tricks of Lake Erie, picks up much less of the wet, cold stuff. One benefit that McKeesport shares with Behrend is the size of classes offered. The ratio between teacher and student is smaller at McKeesport and Behrend compared to University Park. The dining situation is exactly the same. The same meals are prepared at almot every commonwealth campus with a similar cafeteria set-up. Mark was one of the 200 students who lived in the one available resident hall at McKeesport. The resident.hall is very similar to Behrend's, but there are four floors of men and two of women compared to the three and three set-up here. Mark added that another similarity is Camgds Al Vogan Asst Manager: Housing "Students tend not to look at the progress being made that will benefit them down the road. They tend to look at things negatively. I think the reason they do that is a misunderstanding of the growth process. All of the problems that students deal with are viewed with importance. The McKeesport campus does not have surroundings as pleasant as the Behrend campus, The campus is right in the heart of the town, directly across from the area high school. The pleasant scenery of the woods in the gorge and the little streams of this campus are not available at McKeesport. Being so close to a major city meant easy' access to a plethora of nightclubs, downtown department stores and' concert halls It also meant Professional football, baseball, and hockey games, and bars for those students of legal age. Mark said there was never a lack of places to go and entertainment available. If a student did not have a car, public transportation was obtainable directly from campus to Pittsburgh. Overall, Mark and other former McKeesport student's have spoken highly of the campus and the beginning education they received.
