A Lively Chase.
The LimlHvlllo Courier Journal imyn :
Tollco Olllocr llorimmn linil a ratlier excit
ing ohnne yostcrdny mornlup; after Mnrstinll
Stono oiib of tUe negroes who took Zablcr's
bar-room by storm Hiitulnjr morning. Ever
since- Unit time tlin negroes have boon bid
ing awny and nothing has been neon of any
nf them, except tho one ni tested, until
yesterday morning, when ofllocr llermanu
saw Muirtli Ptono near tho cornorof Heoond
and Oak streets. The negro law lilm about
tho name time mid itarted to run pursued
by the officer. The olin.se wns kept up for
n short dintancp, and Ilermonn was rapidly
lessening the spneo between them, when
tho negro Jumped over Into a yard. Her
man ii sprang over tho fence after him, and
was about to bug Ills game, whon a big
Newfoundland deg, owned by tho man In
whoso yard thoy were put in an appearance
and Instead of showing his sense by catch
ing the negro, rushed at tho officer and
fastened his teeth In bis right palm.' A
desperate struggle then commenced between
the officer and the dog. llermauu was
placed at a great diGadvantage, from the
fact that tho dog bad bis right baud fast
and be could not get at either bis pistol or
bis club with his left. Moanwhilo the no
gro bad climbed upon the fouco ou tho
other side of the yard, and after remaining
for a few moments a delighted spectator
dropped over ou tho other side and disap
peared, llermauu finally tnauagod to kick
the dog loose, but the savage animal imme
diately rushed at liiui ngaiu, aud jumping
on bis back fas'.eued Its theeth lu the back
of bis neck. Tho ollicor bad now managed
to get out bis club, aud using it with bis
left band knocked the dog ou the bead aud
broke its bold.
The owner oi tbe dog by this time came
out aud called the animal off. As be valu
ed the animal very highly tbe officer did
not insist on killing it. Hermann's right
band was torribly bitton, and perfectly
helpless, and bis neck was bitten slightly.
Tbe negro has uot been seen biuco, and no
doubt thinks that a wicked dog is the best
to keep arouud a house for the protection
of law-breakers.

A Farmers Secret Foes.
M. C. Browning, thepropretorof a largo
dairy farm near Ellisburg, Camden county,
N. J., found five pounds of arsenic and Paris
green last week in a swill tub, used for
foeding pigs. It had been placed there by
-some unknown enemy, aud ia the third
attempt during the last two years to de
stroy his live stock. In December 1879 his
'barn was set on fire, and twenty-five valu
able cows were destroyed. On the 18th of
last November six cows died from eating
Paris green which had been scattered over
the field where they were pastured. About
the middle of last Ootober a large quantity
of the same deadly drug was found to have
been mixed in a feeding troueh. It was
discovered in time to save the oows, but a
iierksmre bow was poisoned and died. Mr.
lirowning is unable to account for the das
tardly and hitherto unsuccessful efforts to
kill off his stock. He is reputed to be a
quiet, inoffensive; roan without any known
tannmiea. A reward of f 300 bas been offer
ed for the miscreants. -
