Fig Pudding.
A fig pudding made from this receipt
in not only dellulous, but furnishes itlll
another way In which the frugal house
wife may use her crumbs of bread to a
good advantage. Take half a pound of
the best figs, wash them and chop them
fine, two teacupsfull of grated bread,
(crusts for one may be used), half a cup
of sweet cream, one cup sweet milk, half
a cup of sugar, mix the bread crumbs,
and cream, then stir in the figs then the
sugar aud the last thing get in the milk;
pour Into a mould or a pudding dlsli and
steam for three hours.
Hens' Nests on the Ground.
' The good luck in hatching eggs of a
hen that steals her nest in the fleldi
suggested the idea of placing earth in a
box, before setting hens in them. The
neat should be made So large that the
hen can Just fill it; not very deep, and
as nearly Hat inside at the bottom a pos
sible; so that the eggs may not lean
against each other or they are very liable
to be broken, especially by the hens
turning them. There is less trouble from
vermine when nests are so made and the
hen is more likely to be successful in
hatching eggs.
Iron as a Fertilizer.
An exchange says: "The scales which
fly off from Iron being worked at forges,
Iron trimmings, filings or other ferrugi
nous material, if worked into the soil
about fruit trees, or the more minute
particles spread thinly on the lawn,
mixed with the earth of flower beds or
in pots, are most valuable. They are
especially valuable to the peach, and, In
fact, supply necessary Ingredients to the
Boil. For colored flowers they heighten
the bloom, and increase the white or
nearly-white flowers, of the rose fami
ly." Clover as a Fertilizer.
When clover is wanted to enrich the
soil for a succeeding crop, it is better to
let it mature rather than cut It early.
When clover is grown for the seed the
roots are the best developed and contain
most nitrogen. This is the reason why
those farmers who precede wheat with
clover for a fertilizer first cut a crop to
go to seed before plowing It iu. The
roots and scattered leaves of clover make
most excellent fertilizers.
6S"Two Lelpsic chemists have devised
a process for obtaining sugar In a per
manently liquid form. This result Is
said to be effected by adding to a puri
fied sugar solution a small quantity of
citric acid, which combines with the
sugar aud deprives it of its tendency to
chrystalllze.
E8ome experiments by M. Gautier
appear to prove that human saliva pos
sesses, in a milder degree, the same
poisonous property as that of Berpents.
The human saliva Injected under the
skin of a bird caused death, with symp.
toms closely resembling those resulting
from serpent bites.
lA new theory of the so called fas
cination of birds by snakes is that the
bird mistakes the snake's tongue, which
the reptile keeps in rapid and constant
motion, for a lively worm, and watches
it intently with the anticipation of de
vouring it.
A Remarkable Coincidence.
It Is a matter of journalistio record,
that some years since, a schooner set sail
from Baltimore, having on board a crew
of thirteen men. By a most singular
freak of nature, the entire force was
attacked by a skin disease, which mani
fested itself in large ulcerated sores on
the arms and hands, wholly incapacitat
ing the men from duty. The result was
that the vessel was towed back to the
city where the men were placed in the
hospital. Moral! Had Swayne's Oint
ment for skin diseases been used in the
first place, the crew would have recover,
ed in from 12 to 48 hours. 504t
To Restore Rusty Black Goods.
A teaspoonful of spirits of ammonia
added to the rinse water, will make
rusty black goods look as good as new.
G3"Tne easiest method of removing
rust from Iron is by rubbing it with a
rag dipped in oil of tartar. The rust will
disappear immediately.
dfSoaking calioo, Just previous to the
first washing, in a strong solution of
either salt or alum is excellent to pre
serve the color.
t3T Lemon Juice and glycerine will
cleanse and soften the hands.
t3TWagon spokes made of yellow lo
