disparage Judge Graham whose abllty
as a jurist no one can deny.
The reply to it by his son showing
the increased cost of courts during the
last ten years, conceals one very im
portant fact, that Mr. Graham could
have been Iguorant of, and that is, that
fees of jurors have heen kaised from
$1 to $1.50 per day in 18G4, and again
for Perry aud Juniata counties to $2
per day by the act of 1873. His state
ment would have been fairer If he had
stated these. facts, as the fees of jurors
is a very Important item in the costs;
of courts.

The other day while Conductor Er
hart, of the Pennsylvania railroad, was
going through the train to Altoona he
met a party of emigrants who were in a
state of great excitement. One of them
by signs and the little bit of English he
knew, managed to tell the story that at
Harrlsburg he had purchased a cup of
milk from a vender who had went
through the car and in payment had
handed out a ten dollar gold piece. The
milk vender returned him but $3.05 in
change. After the train had started
they put their foreign minds to work at
calculating how much change they
should have received with milk at ten
cents a cup, and then discovered that a
swindle had been played. When the
train stopped Conductor Erhart stepped
into the telegraph office and Bent by
wire a statement of the case to Superin
tendent Carter at Harrlsburg. The lat
ter had the matter inquired into and the
milk vender, a young man named Ed
wards, was ordered to hand over $0.25,
which be did without a quibble, and be
fore the train reached Altoona, Con
ductor Erhart received a message em
powering him to pay that sum over to
the emigrant. The foreigners were
loud in their praise of the promptness
of all concerned.

the horse to such an extent that he be
fcame unmanageable, and a part of the
harness breaking, be started to run. The
occupants of the buggy seeing that they
were unaoie to stop tue norse in nis mad

the basin bridge and into the water, car
rying the buggy with htm, where he
was caught and immediately unhitched
from the buggy to save him from drown

water at the place where he went in.
The only damage done worth speaking
of was the breaking of the buggy.
