HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
For Oiir Farmers.
Corn does Dot succeed well after buck
wheat. Brakes are quarrelsome, the fewer on
baud the better.
Water filtered through charcoal he
comes perfectly pure.
Oak Is stronger than iron, both pieces
being of equal weight.
Foor cows are dear at any price;
really good ones, If young, are never sold
too high. A cow should give at least
$30 Worth of milk a year.
It Is well for farmers to bear In mind
that the average for all breeds of cows Is
about six pounds of hay, or its equiva
lent, for one quart of milk.
The Agricultural Department Is In
formed that the codling moth is making
such ravages among the orchards of
California as threaten the destruction of
all the apple trees on the Pacific coast.
At a recent agricultural gathering In
New England, one claimed that he
made 12 per cent, on his capital invested
In farming, and another said he did not
make over H per cent.
Horse Shoes Kept on too Long.
There seems to be no doubt that this
causes more injury to the feet of a horse
than anything else ; for as soou as the
shoe is fastened on a double action be
gins, as his hoof grows down and press
es against the shoe, and the shoe is ham
mered forcibly up against the hoof every
time the foot is set on the ground after
being raised. This makes the double
action which is so apt to prove injurious.
To obviate this, it becomes necessary to
have the shoe fit nicely and easily at all
times to the horse's foot. To insure this,
it should be taken off and re-set about
once a fortnight ; and in doing so, care
should be taked to first file oil' the
clinching part of the nails outside of the
hoof, so they cannot make large holes or
tear the hoof when withdrawn.
- Borne persons let shoes remain on the
horse two, or three months. Nothing
can be more injurious to keeping up a
sound, good foot than this. The change
of twice a month or so, allows the foot
to expand, and keeps it in a healthy,
natural form. Rural Neiv Yorker.
.gT A farmer who owns forty-seven
head of hornless cattle gives in The
Western Sural his reasons for preferring
them. He says :
" First, they are about as harmless as
a flock of sheep ; second, sheep, colts and
horses can run in the same pasture or
yard and drink out of the same tank
with safety ; third, it is sometimes ne
cessary to milk in a storm, and I have
only to open the cow stable door and
twelve cows will not take more room
than three pairs of horns ; fourth, a
straw-rick two rods long and twenty
feet wide will make a first-rate shelter
for thirty head of young muley stock,
for they will soon have rick shelved all
around, and lie down like so many hogs
and be comfortable under the edges of
the stock, while six pair of horns could
hardly be accommodated on the same
territory. I never have had my horses
wounded, or colts, sheep, calves, chil
dren, women or men tossed upon muley
bulls' horns. My stock are descend
ants of the old English red muley breed.
W From statistics furnished the De
partment of Agriculture, the total wheat
crop of the United States for 18H0, is
given at 40,849,7i;3 bushels, being an in
crease of over 32,000,000 bushels com
pared with the former year. Illinois
produced the largest cro), which was
53,707,200 bushels ; California is second
on the list with 45,700,000 bushels ; Min
nesota comes next with 40,752,000, and
is followed by Indiana with 38,341,900
bushels. Pennsylvania measures out
22,299,090 bushels, being a decrease of
8157 bushels compared with 1879 ; New
York, New Jersey and Ohio all produc
ed considerably smaller crops last year
than in 1879, indicating that In these
States the crop fell off last year as was
anticipated.
O" A very simple remedy and said
to be effective to rid canary birds of
mites, is to place a clean white cloth over
the cage at night. The vermin leave the
bird and gather upon the cloth. They
are very small, red, and scarcely dis
cernible with the naked eye. ,
O" To color drab, take willow bark
and a little copperas.
. 1
Terrible.
Such is the term Mr. C. W. Purcell.of
the Natioual Stock Yards, Chicago, 111.,
applies to his sufferings. He says : " I,
for one, wish to speak a word of praise
for St. Jacob's Oil. I suffered with a
pain in my arm and shoulder for some
nix months and and at times it was ter
rible. One bottle of St. Jacobs Oil.how
ever, cured me thoroughly. Nushvile
