HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
Keeping Fruit.
At a recent meeting of furtuers and
others fur the iIIscushIou of the keeping
of irult, the following Items of experi
ence were brought out, which, lffaiti,
may he of some interest to many of our
readers.
Apples packed in calcined plaster
rotted very badly and quickly. The
dry plaster absorbed enough moisture
from the apples to dampen it and get up
a degree of heat sufficient to spoil the
fruit. Dry earth kept apples in fair
condition to appearance, but the flavor
was spoiled. Buckwheat chaff has
been found excellent for packing fruit,
as it contains very little starch. Wheat
bran is objectionable on account of its
abundance of starch, which soon
moulds and spoils the fruit. Dry, for
est leaves have been used with fair
results for packing apples, Oak leaves
are among the best for this purpose.
Several bushels of fall apples having
been stolen by a hired man, were buried
In a large hay mow and then deserted
fjr several months. In mid-winter
they were discovered and found in a
very good state of . preservation. Tak
ing a hint from this, fifty barrels of
winter apples are now packed in straw
in a cool, dry cellar as an experiment.
Apples were so cheap and plenty last
season that it costs very little to try an
experiment, which has proved very suc
cessful and of great value. Cellars should
be well ventilated at the bottom.that the
whole of the air may be changed. A
brick taken out from the bottom of the
chimney flue makes a good opening for
the escape, of damp air in the cellar.
' Dry sand has been successfully used for
keeping grapes from harvest time till
winter
One gentleman showed a squash
which had been kept in a warm closet
apparently sound, for nearly two years.
Several experiments were reported in at
tempting to change the bearing year of
apple trees, but generally with little
success, owing to the depredations of
insects which multiply so largely in
bearing years, and are always ready to
destroy the whole crop on the following
year, when the product is limited. A7.
E. Farmer.
Peculiarities of tree Growth.
Some noticeable peculiarities are fre
quently observed in forests. A few
years ago some Michigan lumbermen
discovered a chain link protruding
through the bark of a tree, and in cut
ting it out traced its continuance to a
steel trap which was thoroughly imbed
ded out of sight in the wood. The trus
tees of an old burying ground in New
Jersey, while removing the growths of
large timber, the falling of whose
branches frequently broke valuable mon
uments, were engaged in removing a
large willow tree which had a diam
eter of over five feet. Digging deep
among the roots, two footstones were
found completely enveloped and held
fast by the. roots which had grown
about them, while in sawing off the
trunk about three feet above the ground
at a depth of fifteen inches the saw
struck a hard substance, and, in stop
ping to looBen it, a footstoue was discov
ered fully imbedded in the solid wood,
The Scientific News says that house
keepers can overcome mildew or damp
in closets by putting an earthen bowl
or deep plate full of quick lime into the
closet. The lime will absorb the damp
ness and also sweeten and disinfect the
place. Hats, mice and bugs so apt to
get into a damp place, dislike the lime
When the lime becomes slacked throw
it on the manure pile.
A Foolish Mistake.
Don't make the mistake of confound
ing a remedy of acknowledged merit
with the numerous quack medicines
that are now so common. We speak
from experience when we say that Park
er's Ginger Tonic is a sterling health
restorative and will do all that is claim
ed for it. We have used it ourselves
with the happiest results for Rheuma
tism and when worn out by overwork,
