An Irishman by the name of O'B , some ten years ago In the county of M., had a case ln the circuit court, and hav ing at one time In his earlier days read law, undertook to manage the case him self. The judge who was a kind-hearted man, seemed disposed to favor him all he'could by making; such suggestions as he hoped would lead Paddy safely th rough, but finding that bis suggestions were not understood or not appreciated, he Anally said : " Mr. O'B , you'd better get a law yer." To which Paddy replied: " Faith, and yer honor, and I am a lawyer myself, I am!" " Well, sir," Impatiently retorted the Judge, "I will have to give judgment against you." " Then Judge, I'll have to take an appale, and bad luck to ye as long as ye live!" With patience all gone, the Judge said, with considerable warmth : "Mr. O'B , If you continue re marks like this any further, I shall be compelled to Impose a fine upon you for contempt. To which the irrepressible Pat replied Instantly: "No, judge, you can't do that neither, for I have the very highest respect for yer honor ; but thin, judge, I don't think you understand the law I" Chicago Legal News. Russian Babies. A correspondent speaking of Russian babies, described as follows what one sees in the houBe of a Russian peasant. He looks curiously at one oda little bundle laid upon a shelf, another hung upon the wall on a peg, a third slung over one of the main beams of the roof and rocked by the mother, who has the oord looped over her foot. "Why, that is a child!" cries the traveler, with a feeling similar to that experienced on treading upon a toad which was sup posed to be a stone. ' Why, what else should it be V' answers the mother. Having learned so much in so short a time, the inquisitive traveler wishes to Inform himself about the habits of the creature in the bundle; but his curiosity being somewhat dampened by the ex-" treme dirt of the little figure, be inquir ed of the parent when it was washed. "Washed !" shrieks the horrified moth er, "washed ! What, wash a child ! You'd kill it." She was a little Deaf. A very fashionable Galveston lady Mrs. McSpillklns, Is affected with par tial deafness, and also with a very bad cold which, by the way Is very fashion able jdst now. In this connection it may be said she has an infant about six months old.. There was quite a little social gathering at the lady's house a few nights ago, and the high toned Colonel Smith, one of the compa ny, asked how the baby was coming on. . The partially deaf lady must have had the cold running ln her head Instead of the baby, for she replied: "Its the worst one I have bad this winter. It worries' me nearly to death. I have done everything I could to get rid of it, but it's of no use. I can tell by your looks, Colonel Hmith, that you are going to have one too, just like it, pret- ty soon." Colonel Smith don't visit the family any more. A poor memory is an Inconven ient thing. So a man found it who late ly called on friend, and in the course of the conversation asked how his good father was. " He is dead ; did you not know it r"' answered the friend. " Indeed ! I am distressed to hear it," answered the visitor. I had no Idea of it;" and he proceeded to express his sympathy. A year after he called again and forgetfully asked, "And how lit your excellent father K" The prompt reply was, " Still dead. 13?" A widow of Galveston, Texas, being about to marry iier fifth husband was rebuked by her pastor for contem plating matrimony so soon again. She replied : " Well I just want you to un derstand, if the Lord keeps on taking them, I will too." K3"A Wisconsin editor Illustrated the prevailing extravagance of the people now-a-days by calling attention to the costly baby carriages now ln use, while when be was a baby, they hauled him around by the hair of his bead. t9C'lrcumstancea make men, yet one man Isn't a circumstance to another, frequently.
