0 THK TlMKfcJ, XKW WLOOMFIELI), PA. NOVEMBER 30, 1880. HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN. The Peaoh and Where it Originally Came . From. The peach originated in Persia and Nothern India, and le of the same genua as the almond. The nectarine differs from the peach only In being, smooth, while the peach Is downy. It Is a mere varlety.probauly produced and assuredly preserved by cultivation. The freestone peach of the French Is their peche, while the clingstone la the pavic, A remarka ble variety of Chinese origin, has the fruit compressed and flattened, with al most evergreen leaves. The peach is cultivated widely in Southern Europe, in many parts of the East, in South America and Australia, though it baa never, it is believed, attained the perfec tion of the fruit of the United States. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Ohio raise superb peaches and have often orchards containing from 20,000 to 25,000 trees. The quantity of dried peaches is reported to be steadily increasing, while peach brandy is di minishing. Peach water obtained by ey bruiBlng the leaves of the tree, mix. ing the pulp with water and distilling it is not only employed in flavoring, but in medicine as a sedative and vermifuge. The stone of the fruit is very like the bitter almond in its properties and the blossoms, exhale an odor of bitter almonds. Botfi'the stones and blossoms are used in the Making of a liquor called Tersieo. In the Old and New World there is, it is said, more than 100 varie ties of the delicious fruit. Something about Nutmegs. Nutmegs grow on little trees which look like little pear trees, and are gen erally not over twenty feet high. The flowers are very ranch like the lllly of the valley. They are pale and very fragrant. The nutmeg Is the seed of the fruit, and mace is the thin covering over the seed. The fruit is about as large as a peach. When ripe it breaks open and shows the little nut inside. ; The trees grow on the islands of Asia and in tropical America. They bear fruit for seventy or eighty years, having ripe fruit upon them all the seasons. A fine tree in Jamaica has over 4,000 nutmegs on it yearly. The Dutch used to have all this nutmeg trade, as they owned all the Banda islands and con quered all the other traders, and destroy ed the trees. To keep the price up, they once burned three piles of nut megs, each of which was as large as a church. Nature did not sympathize with such meanness. The nutmeg pig. eon, found In all the Indian Islands, did for the world what the Dutch had deter mined Bhould not be done carried those nuts, which are their food, into sur rounding countries, and trees grew again, and the world had the benefit. &"A Columbus, Georgia, paper re lates the following : On Judge Allen's plantation, near Steam Mill, is one of the most remarkable calves on record. It is owned by a tenant on the place, and his wife, who did the milking of cows, usually took her six-year old daughter with her to keep away the calves. The little girl decided she would play milk woman, and see if she conld milk the little calves. She was surprised to find that one of the calves gave milk, ' and called the attention of her mother to the fact. The lady then began to milk the calf, which at nine months old, gave a gallon, and at twelve months feave three gallons per day. The calf was exhibited at the State Fair, and took a premium! Worth Remembering. Now that good times are again upon us, before indulging in extravagant show it is worth remembering that no one can enjoy the pleasantest surroundings if la bad health. There are hundreds of mis erable people going about to-day, with disordered stomach, liver or kidneys, or a dry hacking cough, and one foot in the grave, when a 60 ct. bottle of Parker's dinger Tonlo would do them more good than all the expensive doctors and quack medicines they have ever tried. It al ways makes the blood pure and rich and will build you up and give you good health at little coast. Head of it in an other column. 45 4t A Crosa Baby.
