HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
, Mature Women For Wives.
Youth and beauty are always sure of
a hearing; but some writer comes out
with a few words of admiration for ma
turer charms, In the following Ian
. gunge:
The man who meets and loves the
woman of twenty-live Is truly fortu
nate in meeting and loving her. At
that age she seldom deceives. She may
not have she Is not likely to have then
her first sentimental experience, but
such an experience at such an age is
more than sentimental, and rarely ever
fleeting. She looks at the youths she
imagined she was enamored with at six
teen or eighteen, or often at twenty-one,
and they are more than indifferent or
repellent to her they are ridiculous;
and she, as she then was, is ridiculous to
herself. She cannot but be grateful to
her destiny that her sympathies and af
fections have been reserved for a worthier
object and a higher end. At twenty
five, if ever, a woman'knows and esti
mates herself. She is less liable to emo
tional or mental mistakes. She Is far
surer of her future, because her fate Is
to a certain extent, in her own hands.
Not only is she more lovlier and more
loveable, broader and stronger than Bhe
has been? but her wedded bappyness
and power of endurance are in a manner
guaranteed.
OFAn experienced poulterer says:
By the use of kerosene I keep my two
poultry houses entirely free from ver
min of all kinds; I handle my chickens
and am dally among them, but have
not seen a symptom of vermine of any
kind on my person. Before I used ker
osene, I used to dread handling my
fowls, or going in among them. My
poultry in other respects is better than
ever before, since I began using kero
sene. No person need be afraid of its
hurting young or old fowls. If the
chicks are lousy just touch the fluffs
sides and wings, and the top of the head
with a sponge saturated with kerosene,
and few if any, will remain. Should
any remain, a second application will be
sufficient to destroy all of the lice. Af
ter the chicks leave the mother they
huddle together at night, this gives the
vermin a grand chance to accumulate.
This is effectually prevented by saturat
ing once a week the floor just where
they huddle, either stone board or
ground.
Skimming Milk.
Cif The wise man In enumerating the
times and seasons made no mention of
the time to skim milk, yet, nevertheless,
there is a time a right time, too and
that is just as the milk begins to sour
in the bottom of the pans. Then the
cream is all at the surface, and should
at once be removed with as little of the
milk as possible. If allowed to remain
until the acid reaches the cream it im
pairs it in quality. The housewife or
dairy maid who thinks to obtain a great
er quantity by allowing the milk to
stand beyond that times labors under a
most egregious mistake.
eg"Corn loses one-fifth by drying and
wheat one-fourteenth. From this the
estimate is made that it is more profita
ble for famers to sell unshelled corn in
the fall at 75 cents a bushel than at $1 a
bushel in the following summer, and
the wheat $1.25 in December is equal to
$ 1.50 in the succeeding June. In the
ease of potatoes taking those that rot
and are otherwise lost, together with
the shrinkage, there is but little doubt
that between October and June the loss
to the ownerwbo holds them is not less
than S3 per cent.
t52When possible to avoid, one should
never use new soft soap. We will give
an old friend's method to increase the
qutntity and add to the effect of any old
soap that may be left until this season :
For every six galoos of soap, bring to a
boil three gallons of water in which dis
solve one half pound of borax and oue
half pound sal soda. Stir it thoroughly
into the soap. If too thick, more hot
water can be added. The soap must be
at least two or three months old before
being treated In this way.
Two Organs.
Rogulate first tbe stomach, second the
liver; especial); the first, so as to perform
tbeir functions perfectly and you will re
move at least ninetoeu twentieths of all the
ills that mauklnd is bolr to, in this or any
other climate. Hop Bitters is the only
thing that will give perfectly healthy nat
ural notion to those two organs. 43 2t
