It 1b a matter of common observance that trees and their brandies fall during the prevalence of storms and from per fectly obvious causes. But close obser vers among those familiar with the woods will tell you that oftentimes these things occur Just before a severe storm, and are the sign or forerunner of its ap proach. This phenomenon was witness ed by a farmer In Oswego town while on Ills way last Sunday to attend divine ser vice at the Thompson school house, who observed a large limb break and fall of!' from a tree by the roadside. There was no wind stirring at the time, and no apparent cause for the phenome non. He says that he then made up his mind that a severe storm was close at hand, lie recalled the circumstance that at Hannibal a year ago, during the camp-meeting service, a large beech tree fell upon the campmeeting tent at a time when happily, the congregation was outside and only a smll child was In the tent asleep. The child was not only uninjured, but not even awakened. There was no wind at the time ; in fact the atmosphere was unusually still. There was no apparent cause for the fall of the tree ; but a heavy storm followed shortly after, as Monday's storm sue ceeded the intense heat of the day before. The falling of tree and the apparently almost miraculous escep'e of the congre gation were the occasion of much specu lation, and the incident was quickly seized and forcibly used by the exhorter to illustrate the protecting care of Heav en. The farmer of whom we Bpeak also says that for many years he has observ ed similar incidents of falling limbs and trees in the stillness which so generally precedes great storms of rain or wind. The relator Is a more than ordinarily close observer of things. Digging Potatoes Early vs. Late. For a number of years ye have made it a practice to dig potatoes late, except those needed for table use, or for the market. There is a diversity of opinion which exists on the subject, however, among some of our best farmers, some believing that early digging prevents rot, while others believe that a potato once diseased will rot whether in or out of the ground. If this is true, we have a strong argument In favor of late dig ging, as the poor diseased potatoes will will have rotted in the ground, where they will Improve the fertility of the soil, rather than infect the cellar with noxious odors. We have noticed that potatoes dug early and stored in the cellar, are as likely to rot, as those left in the ground until late in the fall. Potatoes should not be stored in barns or out-buildings during the Autumn months, as they will dry and shrink up, and lose their freshness. They are best kept in a dry cold cellar, in shallow bins, and it is all the better for them if the cellar where they are kept is rather dark. Kerosene Stains upon a Floor. A correspondent writes from Pilot Mound, Minn., that the breaking of a kerosene lamp had caused a "frightful spot" upon the floor, and wishes to know how it can be removed. Good kerosene has a boiliog point of RPO de grees, considerably above the boiling point in lard hence in order to drive it completely from any fabric, from paper, or from wood, it must be heated high enough to form a vapor, when, if pure, it may be completely rempved. Heat may be applied to the floor by using flat irons sufficiently hot, first placing a piece of paper over the spot. It may be that after the oil is driven to the surface by heat, some of the oil remaining in the wood will be brought to the surface by capillary attraction. In such a case it will be necessary to repeat the opera tlon as often as the stain appears. Why Should They. No man or woman can do satisfactory work when the brain is dull, the nerves unsteady, the system relaxed and they 4hey feel geuerally wretched. Why fliould lawyers, merchants, clergymen, doctors, mechanics or- mothers often miserably drag through their .work in this condition,., when .a. small amount of Parker's Ginger Tonic will always, at moderate cost, clear the brain and give thein the strength and the will to terform their duties satisfactorily. Wo have felt its strengthening and bracing effects and can recommend it most highly. Bee other column. 41 4t lESTLydia E.
