Augut 17, 1380-tit J O"" Mr. Smith," eald a lady at a fair, " wont you please buy thli bouquet to present to the lady you loveV" " Twouldn't be right," said Mr. Bmlth ', " I'm a married man." - - (if As they were about to hang an Ir ishman in London, one of his friends who had come to witness the ceremony, cried: "Iulways told you you would come to this 1" " And you always lied I I have not come I was brought 1" CyTHe was old and wealthy, she was young and pretty. The proposal was slightly different from what we generally hear, " Miss Cora, I am very old, you are very young; will you do me the honor to become my widow?" ffj-A new doctrine should be fitted to the mind as women fit dresses. Baste It loosely, try it on carefully, examine It thoroughly, take It in here and let It out there, and finally, when it is just right, sew it together with a strong thread. tTHe appeared to be almost gone. Rolling his eyes toward the partner of bis bosom he gasped, " Bury me 'neath the weeping willow, and plant a single white rose over my head." "Oh, H'b no use," she snapped out, Your uose would scorch the roots 1 " He got well. tArtemus Ward once told us that the funniest story he ever heard was about an inebriated reporter, who leaned over the railing of the reporter's gallery in the English House of Lords and in quired : " Will shum noble 'ord plea' siting a comlo shong." gyFor many years, Moses, a negro, was a servant at the University of Ala bama, and waited on the students very faithfully ; but he was a most notorious hypocrite. ' He was on that account commonly called " Preach" among the boys. One day he was passing a crowd of students, when one of them out of mischief, called to him and said: "I say, Preach, what are you going to do when Satan gets you V" " Walt on students," was the ready reply. Correct Logic. He was lying in front of the store door when the merchant came out, and stir ring him up with the toe of his boot, said: "Are you drunk Y" "You bet." " Then you move off from heie." " Are you drunk 1"' queried the Ine briate. " No ; I am sober," was the indignant response. " Then you can move off from here a d d sight easier than I can." O'There are two sisters in Louisville famous for their wit, and there la also in that town a gentleman , Colonel "Blank" who for nearly two generations has had the reputation of having courted every heiress in the neighborhood. One of the sisters referred to said to the other several weeks ago: "If a million dollars was left to you, what is the first thing you would do V" " I should fall on my knees and pray the Lord to keep me out of Colonel "Blank's clutches." This was reported to the Colonel, who waited for revenge. The other day the witty young woman, leaning on the railing of the piazza at Crab Orchard, saw the Colonel in the yard below. " Well, dear me, Colonel," she said, " I meet you everywhere I go. Can't I go anywhere without seeing you ?" - " Yes, there is one place," calmly re plied the Colonel. "Where is it Viet me go V" " Well, go home." That Boy. . His juvenile heart yearned for a kite string. He had a kite and also an ugly disreputable looking dog. Accompanied by this beast, he went into a drug store and planking down a penny, asked for it's equivalent In licorice. While the drug clerk's back was turned, the wick ed small boy tied to his dog's tall the end of the ball of cord which Is in a case on every orthodox retail store counter. Then be gave his dog a harsh kick and yelled at him to go home. The dog went, and in his best time. He bad got off with about enough string to fly a re spectable kite when the drug clerk had put up the licorice. The boy cut the string the end of what he had was out of the store in a "jiffy." And as that small boy leisurely sauntered out of that store smearing his mouth with that lic orice, the absent-minded drug clerk thought be never had seen a boy take so little interest in things in general.
