Dr. Henderson, of Oalishiels, in the
course of one of his pastoral calls,
came to the house of a woman who had
lost her husband a short time before,
and had been left with a large non-pro-ductive
family ; naturally the minister
Inquired after the health of the house
hold. " Well," said the woman, 'we're
all richt except pulr Davie, he's sair
troubled wl' a bad leg, and not lit to
wark." The doctor could not recollect
who Davie was, but, as in .duty bound,
prayed that Davie's affliction might be
blessed to him, and also that it might
not be of long duration. But going
home and consulting his wife, he said:

Davie V" "Hoot, hoot! you ought to
ken wha Davie is," she replied ; " Davie

An old German who lived down here
at South Chester sent his son to a high
school but as the boy didn't seem to
learn anything in four years, the old
man thought there must be some favor
itism shown his neighbor's children,
so he filled his pocket with greenbacks
and started for the school-house. The
principal was glad to see him. The fa
ther said : " I come to see why is de
reason dat my child don't larn fast as
derestofde childrn." Well, I don't
know. It may be because he has not
