0 THE TIMES, NEW BL00MFIKL1), PA. AUGUST 31. 1880. HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN. Apples. Apples should ba perfectly dry when taken from the trees and kept so until stored away for keeping over winter. When picking use oval-shaped half bushel baskets. The basket may be kept on the arm or a high stool near by, or both, being careful to put none Into the basket but sound, smooth fruit and of fair islze. When the basket Is full carefully pour them Into the bin, and when that Is full, or at night, cover with boards to keepofTth sun and rain. Continue the operation of picking during dry weather until done. Never cover the apples while In the orchard with straw. It makes them too warm, and there is no danger of the fruit being injured by the frost until quite late in the season. They must be kept dry and from the sun. To keep nicely a dry, airy, light cellar and scrupulously clean is absolutely necessary. The sides and celling of the cellar should be cemented with plaster to keep an even tempera ture of cold, and the bottom of the eel lar cemented with waterproof cement to keep out the dampness. There should be one or more windows on opposite sides of the cellar to give free circulation of air when needed. They Bhould be of glass and supported by hinges at the top so that they may be opened and shut as circumstances require. Sowing Rye In Corn. If farmers will sow one-half bushel of winter rye to the acre In their corn, and plow It in the last time, it will not only have a tendency to choke out the the weeds that start up afterward, but there will be no danger of dry murrain among the cattle from eating too freely of dry stalks, as the rye will remain green through the winter, and will be eaten by the stock In preference to corn fodder. It makes a desirable feed for all kinds of stock, and aids materially in the quantity and quality of milk pro duced, besides proving a saving of from two tons of hay for every acre sown ; and last, but not least, It affords a green crop to plow under In the spring which will renew and enrich the land. Every farmer Bhould keep a book in which to paste agricultural scraps. Every one in reading a paper will see a number of things which he will wish , to remember. He will perhaps see sug gestions, the value of which he will de sire to test or hints which he will want to be governed by In future operations. And yet after reading the paper he will throw It down and will probably never see It again. In such a case all the val uable articles will be lost. To prevent such a loss, every reader should clip from the papers such articles as he de. sires to preserve and remember, and paate them in a scrap book. Such a book, at the end of a year or two, will be very interesting and valuable. Scurvy leg in poultry is a disease caused by a gathering of infinitesimal parasites, which come Imperceptibly at first in the crevices between the edges of the leg scales, and which rapidly in crease, piling up on themselves and forming apparently grayish white warts or rough bunches; there are millions of ithem in one bunch. Kerosene oil will destroy them and remove the bunches. Marking Cattle. The ancient Romans markd their cat tle and horses with a metal stamp con taining letters. The stamp was dipped Into fluid pitch, and was used to print on the bodies of animals ; but in the case of runaway slaves, the stamp was made hot and printed in the captive's cheek or ' forehead. ' Excellent Bread Cake. One cup butter, two cups brown sugar, one-half cup raisins stoned and chopped, ' one and one-half cup dough as. raised for bread, mix thoroughly and let it rise in the pans before baking. Spices of all sorts to suit the taste. Flour Gems. These are made by taking a eup of aweet cream, one beaten egg, and stir ring in fine flout until a little stiffer than griddle-cakes. Bake the same as gra ham gems. Hava You Ever Known any person to be seriously ill without a weak stomach or inactive liver or kidneys ? BEST PLOW IN THE WGRLD! THB SYRACUSE CHILLED PLOW CO. of Syracuse, N. Y. Are now putting on the market a Plow that Is as much superior to any Plow heretofore made as the Plowsof the post tew years liavo been superior to those made halt a century ago. It combines all the excellencies of any now In use. H obviates all tho objections mode to any other Plow. In addition It embraces Bevcral new features of the greatest value, for which we have ob tained exclusive Patents. Its BeaimClevls, Jointer Standard and Wheel Standard will be STEEL, and Its mold board will be a composition of Steel and Iron chilled under a process for which wo have also obtained an exclusive Patent It will bo I called THE SYRACUSE Its weight will be eighteen pounds less than our present styles. A first-class Steel Plow, mado In tho or dinary way, full rigged, retails for twenty-two dollars. Inferior Steel Plows retail from six- teen to nineteen dollars . The price of our new Plow will bo but Seventeen Dollnn, and It will be the cheapest Agricultural Implement ever sold. Its mold board will outwear three of tho very best kinds of the ordinary steel mold boards. It will bcout In soils where all Btecl plows and all other plows have hitherto proved a failure. With this Plow will be Introduced a corru gated Plow Point and Jointer Point, on which we have also obtained a Patent, and which is also a great Improvement, both as regards strength and wear. The Jointer can be shifted so as to tolie more or less land, and also more or less pitch, and It can always be kept on a line with tho Plow. I The wheel will run under the beam or one side of It as desired, and always kept In line. The beam Is adjustable for Spring or Fall Plowing, and also for two or three horses. The handles can be adjusted to accommo date a man or boy, on the same Plow. It Is a perfect Plow. Wooden beams are going out of use because they shrink, swell and warp, and never run two seasons alike. Iron beams are too heavy. Malleable beams become demoralized and bend, which Is much worse than to break. A Steel beam Is the necessity of tho day. It is three tunes as strong and very much lighter than any other stylo. When tM say a Hold board Is chilled, the farmers know It Is sa We do not palm off on them a composition of various metals and call It chilled metal. Wo want agents for this new Plow In every town In this State. We can give but a very Bmnll discount to , them, but we will pay the Railroad Freight Wo propose to placo this Plow In the hands of Farmers as near tho cost of manufacture as possible. It will be the beet Agricultural Implement oversold. It shall also be the cheapest. Persons therefore who are not willing to aot as agents on the principle that " a nimble six pence Is better than a slow shilling," need not apply for an agency. No Plows on commission. All sales absolute. C"Thls Is the only Steel Chilled Plow la the World. Steel costs soveral times more than Iron. But this Plow, full rigged, by giving small discounts, can be sold for Seventeen Dollars, Compare this price with that of any iron Plow ever made. It Is cheaper than any other Plow now made would be at five dollars and a half. Where there are no agents we will, on re ceipt of Seventeen Dollars, send a Plow to any Railroad station In the State and pay the freight Address, SYRACUSE CHILLED PLOW CO. Or Syracuse, N. Y-. W Jos.
