Fires In New Jersey. ,
Atmon, N. J., May 17. Oo Saturday
night it was thought the forest fires were
over, but this morning alarming reports
are received of fiercely burning fires south
and east. They have by reports de

yard oountry from hero to Egg Harbor is
totally destroyed. Tbo pcoplo have given
up all bopo. They are prostrated by tboir
efforts iu (igbting tbo ilamcs aud they are
helpless with despair. One cannot realize
the sufibi lug and misory that will follow,
especially to the vineyard growers.
BitU'Ksiii'Ko, N. J., May 17. Tbe fires

special prayers for rain aud for staying tbo
progress of the flames.
At Post's station a house aud barn and
four cattle Were burned ou Saturday night.

Queer Law.
Judge liacon of the Superior Court has
just rendered an important decison for
travelers in declaring that a corporation,
having agreed to carry a passccger over a
through route at a reduced late less than
that asked for transport to some intermedi
ate station, has no right to prevent that
passenger from stopping at such interme
diate points till bo has paid additional fare.
The particular case was that of Ward Mc
Allister, a Harvard law student, who
bought a ticket from Bostou to New York
by the Old Colony line, and on attempting
to go ashore at Newport was detained by
an officer of the company till he bad paid
sixty cents additional. J udge Bacon says
the company may demand tbe difference in
fare between tbo local aud the through
rate, and, if payment is refused, may re
cover tbe same in a civil action, but have
no other remedy.- His Honor also bold
that a passenger leaving the boat on this
dollar ticket would be a trespasser on the
, gang plauk and wharf of the steamboat
company.

given, and Mr. Dickey recognized him as
a person whom he saw in tbe store wbile

he was sitting on the stoop when two men
