THE TIMES NEW ttLOOM FIELD, PA.. MAY 18, 1880.
A Remarkable Case.
A ftti'Rngo case Is reported lu a letter
from Vienna. Months ngo two women tre
turnlng from 8 visit to UosnU, where their
husbands are gnrrisohed, were murdeted
In a wood near Htartb, in Hungary. The
murderers were arrested and could not
deny tlieir ciltno, but tbey did not confess
tbe motive, which la unkuown to this day.
One of the ruffians died in prison before
the sentenoe was spoken. Tbe other was
sentenced to bo hung. A. week ago the
execution took place, and aa it waa carried
out in public great crowds, eager for some
thing uncommon, eveu at the risk of it be
ing uncommonly horrible surrounded the
scaffold. The murderer's name waa
Tabaks, and be belongs to tbe lowest clasa
of the county population. When the cord
was already round hia neclt he expressed
liis desire of addressing tho public, and
began saying with emphasis worthy of an
orator, " I die willingly but my dear la
dies and gentlemen," Here the execu
tioner interposed and withdrew the trap
door, so that Tabaks died in tbe act of
speech, without kuowing it, as it wero,
and without a struggle. The execntionor
had been most earnestly entreated by a
doctor of medicine, a professor, to provide
him for once with a " warm corpse." To
comply with this wish he shortened the
legal " eight minutes " for which a crimi
nal should hang to three, and handed the
corpse over to a physician, who declared
Tabaks to entirely dead. The body was
pread upon the marble table in tbe anat
omy room Bud professor and studeuta pre
pared for the dissection, which, had they '
been in anything of a hurry, might have
'become vivisection. All of a sudden the
body moved, first its feet, and then its
hands, and at last trembled violently all
over. The professor did not lose hi8
presence of mind, but calmly sent to tho
authorities to ask if Tabaks was to be re
stored to life, or executed ngnin before be
TiKftke 1 In the mean time he thought it his
luty as a human being to do all he could
to restore the life which had so unexpected
ly shown itself. After an hour's hard rub
ting and inhaling of Baits, Tabaks was
Auflicieutly recovered to understand that
lie bad come to life this side of the Orcus,
tiot the other side, as he at first bolieved.
lie swallowed a plateful of soup, and then
fell a prey to violent fever, while his neck
welled in a most alarming manner. This
waa all we heard on tho first day, besides
Vagltd information as to the authorities
being uncertain whether the half-slain man
should not be hanged over again more
thoroughly. There was a universal outcry
against this. It was said that Tabaks had
atoned far hia crime by suffering what the
officers of the law had declared to bo
death. More cannot bo exacted by the
law. No man may be killed twice. The
man's death, which took place exactly
twenty-four hours after his execution,
happily put an end to the controversy, and
pity for the sufferer was tho universal feel
ing. He had raved during a whole night,
had suffered the moat horrible spasms, and
had so often attacked his nurses that it
was found necessary to tie him to his bed.
The probable consequeuce will be the re
moval of tho executioner from his ugly
office, which he had discharged with so
little care. .
A Kentucky Horror.
A special dispatch to the Louisville,
Courier Journal from Clarksville, Ky.,
says : " Much excitement was caused yes
terday by tbe lodgment in jail of Daniel
Lyle, colored, his wife, and a negro
woman namod Sunan Talley. Lyle and his
wife have lately become monomaniacs upon
religious subjects. He asserted that he
was the Saviour, bis wife tbe Virgin Mary
aud Susan Talley, who lives with them, a
prophetess. In his zeal ho has, on divers
occasions, appeared at places of worship
for both white and black people, and in
sisted on playing his par t as preacher.
Yesterday Constables Roraily and Saun
ders procured a warrant for his arrest upon
the charge of disturbing publio worship,'
and went to bis house to execute the same.
Lyle resisted furiously, and assaulted Con
wtanble Saunders with an axe. Constable
Homily fired three shots at Lyle, one of
which took cflct in bis right breast and
o.her two in the groin. Lyle then return,
ed to his bouse aud barrioaded tho win
dows and doors, but he surrendered when
Sheriff Mosely appeared with an addition
al posse.
Upon entering the house tbe officers
amelled putrid flesh, and on making search
found two of Lyle's children, aged respec
tively three aud five years, dead, with their
necks broken. The impression is that tbe
murder was Instigated by the two women,
who have both yielded a strong influence
over Lyle, and that he did the killing to
relieve the women of the care of the
children, believing that for the occa
sion he was Herod. Lyle's wounds are
very painful, but are not considered
mortal. .
tW A strange disease has recently made
its appearance in the family of Andrew
Shaw, of Oxford, Ind which resulted in
the death of four of Mr. Shaw's children
during the past three weeka, A swelling
in the throat appears with a few hours' at
tendant aioknesH, and death ensues. Tbe
doctors say it is not diphtheria.
