THE TIMES NEW BLOOMFIELD, PA.. MAltClI 23, 1880.
A Queer Blackmailer.
Somebody In New York lias boon piny,
tng nn annoying and cowardly gnme on
Rov. Dr. Morgan Dix, reotor of Trinity
Protest nut Episcopal chiiroli.ou Uroitdway.
At various- times during tbo pant two
months proprietors of manufacturing es
t.abliRbuiouts In Bt. Lotila, Chicago, Cln
olmiall, Cleveland, ColunibtiR, Louisville,
Mllwnukoo and Bt. Taul bave received
postal cards purporting to be from Dr.
Dix, asking tbe fullest Information con
cerning tbclr wares, wlileu included every
tblng from .tbreshing mnoliltios and (Ire
proofs to shotguns and shoes. Proprietors
of numinous fernnlo spiuluni Ira were simi
larly requested to send catalogues to Dr.
, Dix; publishers were requested to send
lilui full particulars of aH'kiuds of lllblcs,
and pawnbrokers nnd Cbntbntu street
clothes dealers vturo largely invited to
bring second-hand clothing to his residence.
Advertisements tolling pnoplo out of em
ployment to call at Mr. Dix's houso weio
inserted In tbo nc wsyn pern. ICplscopnl
clergymen vtero invited by postal card to
meet tbo Lord Illshop ef Kxotor or York
at dinner at Dr. Dix's roaldrmuo. Proml
neut mcicnutilo linns like A. T. tUowui t
& Co., nnd Arnold, Constable & Co. wore
notified, apparently by Dr. Dix, that
" t,liclr Impel tincnt letter to biin bad been
placed in tho bands of his counsel to pro
eewl against them," ami all the cobblers on
Sixth avenue were summouod by mull to
his bouse to mend children's shoes. Dr.
Dix's door-bell was nearly rung oft' by the
numerous and heterogenous callors, and lu
February be received au anonymous letter,
say lug ho would no longer be annoyed If
he paid tbe writer $1000. He was directed
to Insert a personal lu the New York Her
ald, reading " Gentleman Jo AU right."
On the 24 th there wero three porsonals la
tho Herald for " Gentleman .To," who had
beeu answering advertisements for lost and
stolen articles also. Those who answered
" Gentloman Jo's oilers, which were in
creased, never received any response. All
tho letters which could be collected from
the various parties who had been addressed
in Dr. Dix's name were In the same hand.
At last accounts the man who did It all had
not been cimgbt, but Dr. Dix is having a
ieBt, thanks to tbe newspaper account of
.his experience. If the blackmailer is
caught there is forgery enough to put him
away for the rest of a Methuselah's life.
t5T" A few days before, the schools were
closed by order of the School Board, at
Lansing, Mich., one of tbe teachers at
noontime espied a small boy with a red
flannel scarf around his neck. Visions of
diphtheria immediately floated through
her brain, and she ordered the young John
Ileury to pack up his books and return no
more " until your throat is perfectly well."
He obeyed the summons, and on his way
borne met three of bis companions, who
noticed his books and saluted him with :
" What'sup?" John proceeded to explain
that tho piece of red flannel had gained
him a furlough. Tbe three youths held a
short council of war, chipped lu what little
spare change they could muster, went into
a dry-goods store, bought half a yard of
red tlaune), tore it in strips and placed it
around their necks. In just twenty min
utes from that time three more boys were
ordered out of the school-room, on the
ground that they wero threatened with
diphtheria.
tW There has arrived at the eastern
penitentiary a young man named Chester
1). Fulraer, son of Henry Fulruer, oue of
the wealthiest citizens of Easton, Pa.
During last summer the rooms of several
of the guests at the Burnett house, in
Stroudsbuig, Pa., were robbed of valuable
articles aud money, and suspicion resting
on Fulmer, his room was searched, and
some of the stolen property was found se
creted there in a cigar box. He was ar
rested aud tried at the December term of
the Monroe county court, and, being
found guilty, was sentenced to an impris
onment of two years aud six months.
O Clarion county is somewhat excited
over what is believed to be a ease of mur
der. The body of John Blair was found
about a year ago on the river bank, with
bruises on the head, which caused a verdict
by tbe Coroner's Jury of accidental death
by drowning. Since then a man named
Pixley, with whom he bad been hunting,
has returned after a long disappearance,
and with a strange woman, who replaced
his wife and children. He beat her the
other day, and she threatened "to give
him away " for the murder of Blair, and
she said she could prove it. The District
Attorney is making an investigation.
t5J A New Haven cat of culture, hav
ing been locked in a cellar and unable to
got out, clawed at the wire of the door
bell which ran through the cellar, and
made tbe bell ring inoessantly. The own.
er of the bouse, a timid man, after repeat
edly going to tbe front door and finding no
one there, called upon a passing policeman
and the two well armed went into the cel
lar. The cat then quietly went out.
tW Robert Brouse, judge of the coun
ty court of Pleasant county, West Virgin
La, died while opening court on Saturday
morning, the 13th inst. He was eighty years
old and it was supposed he died of heart
