Having made quite a upeclnlty of grow ing pntatoes fop the last thirty yenrs, I have hnd ample opportunity to look Into the peculiarities of their growth, mid they have often been very striking. One farmer will report thnt Ills heat yields are obtained by plantliigne or two eyes in a hill, while another could only get 'his maximum crop by planting large -whole potatoes, and sWU others, some .years, really do get better results by planting whole small pettutoes than from large ones cut as they usually are. One man I know, planted part of a field with a machine and ijrt by baud, all from the same pile of seed and all the same day. Those .planted by the nift. chine did much tlw best so much that 'their superiority showed very plainly all summer while growing. Some years we will see those planted extremely late doing the best, while In other years those only do well that are planted 'earliest. All of these, and many more, are the peculiarities that I have noticed about "the growth of pota toes, and In everycase by investigation, a good reason could be assigned plainly in accordance with the principles of their growth. 1 'Bright state these rea sons here, but that is not what I intend to write aboutijust now. In I7ie Farmer of Dec. 27, J. ' E. Meyres says lie always sought to plant potatoes in thebirk of the moon, in March or April. , The question 'before us then is, " Is the growth of potatoes affected by the phases of the moon ?" March and April are good months 4a which to plant po tatoes, but has the phase of the moon anything to do with it i Thousands of farmers, utterly disregarding the moon, have planted,' if it so happened in any other quarter ot that luminary, and have obtained equally good crops when the natural conditions of growth were equally good. This fact leads us to dis regard the restriction to one phase of the moon. Even if the moon had ever so much to do with the growth of pota toes, we could not regulate its influence by planting in one particular quarter, for there ls.no assurance that this is the time they will oenunence to grow. That might have been in the old of the pre vious moon, or they may not commence to grow for two or three weeks after planting. Ttveuiene planting has little to do with it. I have never seen a failure of this crop charged to .planting in the wrong phase of the moon, or a good crop at tributed to planting in the right phase, but what either ieaait could be traced to natural causes, easily explained. But after all my experience, I would advise planting iu thedatkof the moon if the land was in the beet -order then ; if not, work at it till it is in the best order ,even if you have to plant in the new of the moon. H. Ives in Jhxzctlcal Farmer. Wheat Growing Maxims. Somebody has 'been.at the trouble of condensing a great deal of information about wheat growing as.follows: 1. The best soil for .wheat is a rich loam. 2. Wheat always likes.a good, deep, soft bed. 3. Clover tuind iundur makes just such a bed. 4. The best seed is heavy, oily, plump and clean. o. About two inehes ls the (best depth for sowing seed. C. The drill puts La the seed better and cheaper than broadcasting. 7. From the middle of September to the last of October k the best time for mowing. 8. Drilled, one bushel of seedier acre; if sown broadcast two. 9. One heavy rolling After sowing does much good. 10. For flour, cut when the grain be gins to harden ; for seed, ot until ilt has hardened. CS A Berks county man rids his tree effectually of caterpillars, by fastening a rough corn cob to a pole and running it into the nests, turning and twisting the cob a number of times. He says tins nests become detached from the branch es and adhere to the corn cob. Other methods have heretofore been, tried by him, but tble he finds to be the best. A fi.od Housewife. The good housewife, when she U giv ing her house iU spring rennovating, chould bear in tuiud that the dear in mates of her bouse are more precious than many houses, aud that their sys tems need cleansing by purifying the blood, regulating the stomach and bowels to prevent and cure the diseases arising from spring malaria and miasma, and she must know that there Is nothing that will do It bo perfectly and surely as Hop Bitters, the purest and best of mei". jcins.. ee other column.
