8 THE TIMES NEW BLOOM FIELD, FA.. MAltCIl .), 1880. A Woman' Ingenuity. A New York lady was leturnlng from a matinee nt Wallack's, ono Suturdny after noon, when she lind bur Bilk (hens Dear ly ruined by the ppntterlngs from a street. HweoplnR niachliio. Bbe indignantly told tier friends she could Invent a bettor street nweqpr than that borself, and In spite of their lidloule did no. Bbe had no end of trouble fretting a model made. The work men laughed at and imposed upon hor, charging her exborbltant prices for every thing. She sent a pattern to a tinsmith, and he sent the duplicate nn inch shorter. The second time be made it an inch lon ger. Thon be wanted to know what the thing was Tor, anyway, and said be didn't suppose It would make any difference If It wasn't exactly llko the pattern. The in ventor teld him to mind bis own business ; when be filled her order she would pay bis bill. At the end of a year from the time' of her silk-dress mishap the model was done. Klio has patented it, and proposes to have the lion's share In all the profits for herself. Sho was a mechanical enthu siast when a child, and inherited it from her father, who, she says, was constantly Inventing things. A Miser Dies of Starvation. John B. Felly, ngod 79, was found last week at bis home in Spencer township, It unison couuty, Iud., lying dead upon the floor, with his eyes eatou out, and one arm and one side frightfully gnawed by rats. He was quite feeble, u widower, lived alone, and had been dead a week when bis body was discovered. There was no food In the bouse, nor anything to prepare any from, and the conclusion is irresistible that the old man died of starvation. He own ed a farm of 100 notes of good laud. Three weeks ago be went to Kothrock's mill, near by, and asked to purchase some flour ou a sh ort credit, but was denied ; then the old man returned home to die of starvation. He was a miser and bad a good deal of money hid away. ( Too Much Importing. Becietary Sherman is concerned about the accumulation of silver in the Treasury, and bus called the attention of the Cabin et to it. The pile of silver is going up and the pile of gold is going down in the TreaB ' ury vaults. The immense increase in im ports has caused the flow of gold to this country which was so large three and five months ago to cease almost entirely, and the tide has turned the other way. If the im ports keop up until June to the amount re ported in January and February the bal ance of trade iu favor of the United Btates will be reduced to a very low figure for this year and the gold accumulated will be drained away. The Secretary is anx ious to get the silver dollars into circula tion and use them instead of gold in the markets. ffiffiY DAW An Unlucky Surrender. A dispatch from Butler, in this Btate, to . the New York Times says that ten years ago James McIIenry, of Atlantio and Great Western Railway fame, purchased 28,000 acres of undeveloped iron laud in Butler and Lawrence counties. The pur chase price was $300,000, of which he paid 120,000. The lands are now being devel oped, and capitalists are rapidly securing property at an enormous prices. The Mo Henry purchase is now worth more than double the price he was to pay for it. Pittsburg, March l.-Quite a panio was created this morning in a small village called Temperanceville, located on, the Mouongahela river, about twenty-three miles from this city, by the persistent at tortfps, to destroy the place. The village is immediately opposite Monongahela City, which is in the local option county of Washington. The liquor dealers estab lished their headquarters at Temperauce ville, to which place the tipplers, old aud young, resorted. About 2 o'clock this morning Markle'a tavern was set on Are and totally destroyed, together with all its ooutents. A private house adjoining, owned by Frank Menown, was also consumed. Whilo this fire was in progress a now house, oooupicd by Fred. Anton, saloou keeper, was fired, but the flame was extinguished. The incendiary then applied the torch to the building oc cupied as a saloon by Fred. Lamon. The first attempt failed, but two hours later a second effort was made, and the building and its contents were destroyed. No clue has been obtained of the perpetrators. tW A young woman member of the Rose Tree fox hunting club of Chester county won the admiration of spectators a few days ago by driving her hunter at hot speed down a steep hill and leaping him over a stone wall and road ditch at the foot. She kept her saddle as though she had been a part of it, aud when in the air looked defiantly back at some of the men, members of the olub also, who bad reined up and were going around the wall. She becomes the heoioe of the two fox hunting couuties of the state. tSf As Myron Cummings was driving past a place -wheie some wood-choppers were at work, near Woodmaosle, N.J., last week, a huge tree fell, killing Mr. Cum mings and one of his horses. - Hill lid, i VEGETABLE zW. erai 5 I I Its .rftti I?
