' A eorrenpon)ent of a Chicago paper, writing from Cheyenne, Vyomlng, glves an interesting statement of thecoBtond profit of Block raising In Hint Territory. He saye that a liortl of 1,000 Texas cows and 40 short horn 111118 cost, at a liberal estimate, $15,000. in five years the liatr ural Increase gives 6000 head of cattle, old and young, worth not less than $70, 0(0. Five men, lncldlng the foreman of the ranch, are sufficient to take care of 4,000 cattle. A good foreman can com. tnand $75 per month. An ordinary herder receives $35 per month. The oet of necessary ranch buildings Is triflng. The total expense of a herd of the number above mentioned for five years may be placed at $35,000, this in eluding a contingent loss of five per cent, of the cattle, leaving a oet profit of $10, 000 on the $15,0C0 invested five years be fore. The cattle buslneos in Wyoming is very large and rapidly increasing. At the commencement of IS77 there were in the Territory 277,000 head, of an av erage value of $15 per head, making to tal value of over $4,000,000. From varl ous points in Wyoming there were ship ped in 1878 some four thousand car loads of cattle, worth in Chicago $3,000,000. During 1870 a considerable advance was made in the number shipped, the larger part of the shipping being done in the last quarter of the year. How to Make Hens Lay. A correspondent informs us that while on a visit in the fall to a friend, he was c surprised to Bee the number of eggs he dally obtained. He had but sixteen hens and the product per day averaged thir teen eggs. He had been in the habit of giving on every alternate day a tea spoonful and a quarter of cayenne pep per mixed with soft food, and took care that each hen obtained her share. The experiment of omitting the pepper was tried, when it was found that the num ber of eggs were reduced each trial from five to six dally. Our correspondent be licves that the moderate use of this stimulant not only increases the number of eggs, but effectually wards off diseases to which chickens are subject. Measuring the Height of a Tree. When a tree stands so that the length of its shadow can be measured, its height can be readily ascertained as follows: Set a stick upright let it be perpendlc ular by the plumb-Hue. Measure the length of the shadow of the stick. As the length of its shadow Is to the height of the stick, so is the length of the shadow of the tree to its height. For In stance : If the stick is four feet above the ground, and its shadow is six feet in length, and the shadow of the tree is ninety feet, its height will be sixty feet (0: 4: : 80 : 60). In other words, multi ply the length of the shadow of the tree by the height of the stick, and divide by the length of the shadow of the stick. To Get Rid of Mould In Cellars. A correspondent recently asked us for a simple and effectual remedy for fungus and mould in cellars. A German agri cultural journal gives the following : "Put some roll-brimstone into a pan and set fire to it ; close the doors, mak ing the cellar as nearly alr-tlght as pos sible, for two or three hours, when the fungi will be destroyed and the mould dried up. Repeat this simple and inex pensive operation' every two or three months, and you will have your cellar free from all parasitical growth. Car bolic acid in proportion of 4 ounces to to the bucketful of whitewash will also prevent mould." As there Is much controversy in the agricultural papers at present as to how to make and save manure, I will give my plan in as few words as possi ble. First, I keep my horses and cows In the same stable; I bed my horses with good wheat or oats straw ; and when they have stood on It one night, I clean all the straw and manure out of the stall and put in under the cows. By doing this I save straw and it makes the manure finer. The horse manure l always dry, and by putting It under the cows It absorbs all the urine, and it also keeps the horse manure from burning when thrown in a heap. When the manure gets well warmed in a heap, I take a long handled manure fork and turn it over, and by that time it is well mixed and ready for the land. If any of your correspondents have any better way, let us bear from them. Exchaitye. Maine News.
