A Puzzled Bird Dealer. ,
Yesterday a lady stepped Into a bird
store on Kearny street to purchase a
parrot for a household pet. Having ex
amined the collection, she turned to the
proprleter, and without otherwise desig
nating her selection, simply said :
" I will take Honesty."
"Beg your pardon ma'am," said the
dealer, " which one did you say you will
take r"'
lIwill take Honesty. Please have
him sent round to No. C83 Geary street.'
"Honesty?" repeated the puzzled
dealer. " And which is Honesty V"
Why that one, of course," said the
self-possessed customer, pointing to by
far the fairest bird in the flock.
" All right, ma'am," said the orni
thological trader, and as he was making
the necessary change he timidly ventur
et to ask
And may I inquire ma'am, why you
call It Honesty V"
" Certainly," answered the customer,
with a heavenly smile, " that parrot Is
Honesty because Honesty is the best
Toll I see."
The dealer was struck with congestive
chill, and gave the lady a half dollar
short of her change.
A Perilous Widow.
An admirer of the beautiful, i. e., a
gentleman who has rtad the Drawer for
twenty years and is still living, in Ver
mont, sends us this :
Democrats are the exception instead
of the rule in Vermont, and it is unusu
al to see more than two or three gather
ed together. Widow has burled
three husbands, all prominent Demo
crats. At the funeral of the last, many
of the " unterrlfled " were in attendance
and as they were leaving the house, a
gentleman remarked in an under-tone,
"This looks like a Democratic State
Convention.',
The widow is soon to marry a fourth
husband, who is also a noted Democrat,
and as the matter was being discussed
recently, Jim , who is one of the
" true blues," said : "Boys, this thing
is getting serious: at this rate the widow
will in a few years, ruin the Democratic
party of Rutland County." Harper.
Musn't Do It Again.
An accident occurred in Thomaston
some years ago in connection with the
Kaugatuck Railroad Company that has
probaly never appeared in print. A
man by the name of Darrow owned a
number of cows, and one day they es
caped the confines of their pasture and
strayed on to the car track. The en
gine of a passing train ran over and kill
ed twoof the animals.. The next day
Mr. Darrow went to Mr. Waterbury,
then superintendent of the road, and,
after explaining the matter of his loss
to him, asked him what he would do
about it? Bald Mr. Waterbury: "Was
any damage done to the road, as you
saw?" "Why no, not as I know of,"
said Darrow. "Was the engine or any
of the cars injured in any way ?" "No,
of course not," said Darrow. "Well,
then," said Waterbury, "if no damage
was done to the company, I won't do
any thing about it, but you must be
careful not to allow such a thing to oc
cur again."
A Majority For The Union.
The humor of the war continues to
crop out here and there, and is relished
equally by the gray-coats and by those
who wore the blue. For instance, here
is good old DanielS. Helton, a Baptist
preacher of Roane County, Tennessee,
eighty-eight years old. He had sixteen
sons In the Union army and two in the
confederate, and thereupon become sta
tistical by saying, "My sympathies were
with the Union by fourteen majority."
The computation seems to be charged
with accuracy.
" Oh, doctor," said an anxious moth
er to the family quarantine, " what can
you do for my boy ? He sits around the
house, and wants broiled chicken all the
time."
"There is nothing very serious the
matter, madam. The boy has a fowl
stomach, that is all. Give him a few
eggs for a change."
63" A little Oil City girl observed her
mother measuring cloth by- holding it
up to her nose with one hand and ready
ing out to arm's length with the other.
She assumed a thoughtful aspect and af
ter cogitating a few moments asked:
"How can you measure cloth that way ?
Can you smell a yard?"
0"My wedding trip," said' the
groom as he stumbled over the bilde'a
train.
