(SiT "If you marry tlrace," exclaimed an irate fulher to his. son, "I will cut you oil' without a cent, and you won't have so much as a piece of pork to boll In the pot." A snobbish young man' with a face showing considerable assur ance and accompanying two young women, tupped her on the shoulder and blandly Inquired : "Would you mind taking seat at the door, ma'am, and give these two ladies a place at the front, so that they may see good V" She looked up into his face and la no cently asked: "Is there plenty of room at the door?" "Heaps of It," he eagerly uttered. "Kit there then," was the exhaustive reply. An Astonished Wench. Some of our worthy colored brethren of the Baptist persuasion bad a baptism down at the creek last Sunday, end the ceremony attracted a very large crowd of people. Mrs. Pitman's colored ser vant glil was very anxious to be present, and as It was not her Sunday out, she slipped away from the house while the dinner was cooking, and went in her working clothes. Her interest was so intense that she stood close to the min ister, who was in the water while the ceremony proceeded. After six or seven bad been dipped, the clergyman, filled with enthusiasm, seized her and pulled her into the water. She resisted, but the minister imagined that she was merely afraid of the cold ness of the water, so before she could explain the situation, he soused her. She came up spluttering, and exclaim ed: " What you doln ? Lemme go, I tell you!" But he exerted his strength, and sent her " ker-chuck" below the surface again. She emerged, clawing tbe air wildly and shouting: " G'way from here I Don't you cbuck me under again, you Digger 1" But the clergyman was inexorable, and he plunged her under a third time, and held her there for a minute, so as to let it soak in and do her good. Then she came up and struck for the shore, and standing there, looking like a drag gled uaermuld cut in ebony, she shook her fist at the astonished pastor, and shrieked : Oh I I'll fix you I IH bust the head offen you, you or'nary trash I sousen' me in dat dare creek and nearly drownd ed me, when you know well enough all de time dat I'se a Methodist, and bin chriesened by dem dat's yer betters, and knows more about religion than all de Baptlsses dat ever shouted, you mis'able black scum 1 and me got the rheumatiz enough to set me crazy I Oh, I'll see what de law can do for you ! I'll have you 'rested dls very day, or my name's Dot Johanna Johnson, you woolly-head-edhorrln'l You hear me?" Then Johanna went home to re-dress, aud the ceremony proceeded. Miss John son is now persuaded that the Baptists are not any better than pagans.
