when the roll was being called, refused
to answer to the name of " Ebenexer
Mead." The officer reiteatcd the call.
No answer. "Is Ebenezer Mead on the
ground V" " Eben Mead Is here," quoth
the corporal. The " Ebenezer" was re
peated again In a tone like a northwester.
" Captain," quoth the ram pant corporal,
" your name Is Peter Read ; would you
respond If you were called Peter-sneezer
Read?"
Hallo, Robinson I I haven't
seen you since you had your glass eye

The Cost of Keeping a Cow.
A witness in a case in court here the
other day was asked whether be had
much experience in and knew the cost
of feeding cattle and to give bis estimate
of the cost of feeding a cow, to which
he replied : "My father before me kept a
dairy. I bajre bad a great deal of ex
perience in buying and selling and keep
ing cattle, as man and boy, in the dairy
business for fifty years. I think my long
experience has qualified me to know as
well as any man can the coat of keeping
and feeding cattle."
"Well," broke in the attorney, impa
tiently, "tell us the cost of keeping a
cow."
"Well, sir, my experience after fifty
years In the business is that it costs
well it depends entirely on how much
you feed the cow."
