THE TIMES NEW BLOOM FIELD, 1A DECEMBER 23, 1870.
HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
How to Knep Younfl.
A good woman tivvpr grown old. Yuan.
mav go over lift lieml, luit If benevo.
leiicoutnl virtue dwell In Iht lienrtuhe
1b br olieorftil an wlien the uprlng of life
first opened to lier view. When we
look upon a good womiui, we never
think of her age Hhe looks us charm
ing ns when the rime of youth bloomed
upon her cheek. That rose has not fad
ed. In tier neighborhood she Is ft friend
and benefactor, In theehureh the devout
worshipper and the exemplary Chrls
taln. Who does not love and respect
the woman who has passed tier days In
ants of kindness and nieroy who lias
been the friend of man and Ood whose
wholejlfe has been a scene of kindness
and love, a devotion of love and relig
ion V We repeat, such a woman cannot
grow old ; she will always be fresh and
buoyant in spirits, and active In humble
deeds of mercy and benevolence. If a
young lady desires to retain the bloom
and beauty of youth, let her not yield
to the sway of fashion and folly; let
her love truth and virtue, and to the
close of life she will retain those feelings
which now make life appear a garden of
sweets ever fresh and ever new.
Broom Corn Seed.
Au exchange states that the seed of
broom-corn, which has hitherto been
coiiHldered useless except for planting,
and au Inferior food foi cattle, has been
discovered to be valuable as a breadstuff.
It was first used as a substitute for
wheat In 1870 and 1871, but, like many
other good things was lost sight of, and
its manufacture was never carried to
success, and never became even particu
larly known until about three years ago.
The yield of Hour is about one-half In
place of two-thirds from wheat. The
bran Is also as valuable as wheat bran
as a food for animals. The flour cannot
be told from wheat flour, and the bread,
cake, etc., Is delicate, inviting, and deli
cious, and easily digested. The yield of
broom-corn seed Is also enormous, a sin
gle spear often producing a pint of seed
and tiie yield has reached five hundred
bushels to the acre, while It is safe to es
timate the average at one hundred bushels.-
Keeping Old Sheep.
It is folly to keep old sheep. They
should be turned oil' to the butcher while
they are In their prime. It does not
take half so much to fatten them then.
When they get old and thin, in order to
put them in condition to slaughter the
whole superstructure must be rebuilt.
Four sets of lambs are all that a ewe can
bear; this will bring her to five years
and this Is an age when with a little ex
tra care, she will round into a fine car
cass. Exceptions may be made when
the breed is scarce, aud the blood is
more valuable than anything else.
To Repair a Flat Roof.
Flat, leaky, shingle roofs have been
well repaired by using hot tar in which
hydraulic cement has been mixed, until
it Is as thick as can be spread. When
it Is spread, sift more dry cement over
it until a person can walk over it with
out its sticking to his feet. The tar pre
vents the cracking of the cement, while
that In turn prevents the tar from run
ning. If it is well worked under the
shingles,. and the cracks are well filled,
a good water-proof roof may be made
with little expense.
63" In fattening beef, let process be as
quick as possible. Any stint in feeding
at such times will tend to make the
meat tough and dry. Stall fed animals
will fatten more readily than others,
and youi g animals require richer food
than older ones. In winter, fattening
mucli depends upon the warmth of the
stable. The warmer the cattle are kept
the less food will be needed.
rgST A cellar that is cool, dry and dark,
aud yet well ventilated, Is the best place
for preserving potatoes in large quanti
ties. When smaller quantities are to be
preserve.1, there is nothing like dry
sand. The same may be st;ld of fruits
and roots of all sorts.
- .
Truth and Honor.
Query : What is the best family med
iclne in the world to regulate the bowels
purify the blood, remove costiveness
and -biliousness,. aid digestion tone up
the whole system? Truth and honor
compels us to answer, Hop Hitters, be
ing - pure, perfect and harmless.
