r 8 THE TIMES, NEW BLOOMFIELD, PA. NOVEMBER 25, 1879. Breathes Through a Hole In His Throat. Tliore Is a nmn unmetl l'etor Setzer, now in tli8 city lioapital, whose case is very pe culiar. He goes around with a hole in Ills throat and windpipe nearly an large as a silver liftlf-tlimo, and notwithstanding this lie is to nil appearances perfectly healthy. More than a year agowhilo living In Phila delphia, Betzer roado a desperate attempt to commit suicide in which he was nearly successful. lie was led to the act by a business failure and domestic trouble which caused his separation from his wife. Tak ing a razor, he made deep cuts In each tvrist, expecting to bleed to death. After waiting an hour, the desired e fleet not hav ing occurred, he again seized the knife and drew It across bis throat just utyler the chin, severing the wiudplpe, and making a long and dangerous gnsh. lie became in sensible, and would have died had lie not been discovered in time. lie was scut to the Philadelphia hospital, where he 'Was atteuded by some of the best physicians in the city. After remaining sixteen weeks be recovered sufficiently to leave. It was .considered a wonderful cure. The wound in the neck however, had not completely .healed. He afterward went to Cincinnati, then to Lexington, and Anally came to Louisville, having formerly lived here, fol lowing the trade of a baker. As be was still inconvenienced by the hole in his neck lie gained admission a few days ago to the city hospital. The wound is just above the " Adam's apple," and three-eight of no. inch in diameter. When he first came to the hospital the hole was twice as large. No particular mode of treatment is used, the doctors only seeing that he receives proper rest and diet, and allowing nature to do the rest. Betzer is lively and cheer ful, and the probabilities are that he will entirely recover. When he attempts to talk he hus to place his finger or a bandage 'Over the hole in bis neck, lie possesses the rare accomplishment of being able to ibreathe wjth his mouth and nose both shut. A Pretty Pickpocket, The Richmond (Va.) Slate says: A short time since a gentleman returning from the fair grounds iu a crowded vehicle, felt his watch slipping out of his pocket. He clap ped his bauds to the time piece, and was surprised to find that it came in contact with the hand of a well-dressed and pretty young lady who was sitting at his side. He looked around at her, and was non-plussed at seeing two dainty little hands encased in beautifully fitting gloves, which were crossed on her lap. He saw through the trick at once. This female was a pickpock et, and the hands crossed upon her lap were false The gentleman kept quiet until the vehicle had gotten well into town, when he told the female that she had better get out with him. She readily assented, the wag on was stopped and the two alighted. Up on reaching the sidewalk he told her that he intended to call a policeman and have her arrested and taken to the station house. She begged piteously for mercy and by her seductive ways Boon succeeded in getting be old gent to let ber go free. Lost on the Lake. Sackktt's Harbor, N. Y., November 18. The steam tug Seymour, of Ogdens burg, left Cape Vinoent yesterday noon with a tow consisting of three dredges, two derricks and seven scows, owned by Eckler & Arnold, of Buffalo. They had fine weather until after passing Gallaup islands off Sackett's Harbor, when a gale of wind from the northeast with a heavy snow-storm set in. The tug and tow cot within five or six miles of Oswego, When they lost their iights. The tug was turned around and endeavored to hold the fleet until day-light but the fleet broke away and was lost with all hands except those who were rescued by the tug. Thirty-one persons, including three women and a girl, were drowned. The fleet is a total loss. A Curiosity of Crime. In studying up this matter I hare run .across this curiosity of crime : A man has been four times to the Wis 'eomsin State prison for stealing a cow. Beig asking why he did not steal a horse,' i be-said that would send him uplongor than 'he-waatedtoatanyonetime. The statute pnts the maximum for which sentence can be passed for stealing anything of less val ue than-jfliao at one year. He says there is no telling bow high up men will swear the value of horse, but there is no danger of their "swearing an old cow up toa hun dred dollars." He says be can get the price of the .new, his own keeping for a year, a 1rit-of.ol0tl.es and five dollars, for one year's work ia prison, and ho thinks that is doing well for Aim. The abolition of term sentences would relieve society of Ithat kind of criminal prank. A Series of Practical Jokes. An Alderman in a suburban New York town offered a man a dollar to play a prac tical joke on a neiglibor, and then paid Lira ia counterfeit money. The reoelver fct the money took a blank warrant, filled it out with a Justice's name gave it to the Constable and had the Alderman arrested. ' By this time the latter had got tired of Jok-' ing and began a suit in earnest for false imprisonment. Thereupon the other'party obtained a genuine warrant against the Alderman for passing counterfeit money. It is now the Alderman's "play."
