tJiT A young lady who ought to know,

6"Are you a piofessor of relIglon,my

"No, ma'ma," was the little boy's

3" Ebenezer Stone and his wife Flora,
out in Illinois, were divorced not long
ago but afterwards they came to an un
derstanding, were re-manled, and are
now happy together as far as we know.
It was a case of Eb and Flo, it would

A little boy aged four years was

" Well, ma," he replied, "Harry has

smiled approvingly.

"Well," said the candidate, "mine

Calling for Help.
When Dick Amiz first crossed into
York State from the Canada side, he
took lodgings at an Inn inCanandaigua.
A waiting maid sat at the table with
them, and Dick spoke of her as the ser.
vant, to the no small scandal of mine
host, who told him that In his bouse
servants were called help. Very well :
next morning tbe whole house was
alarmed' by a loud shouting from Dick
of "helpl help! water! water! help I"
In an Instant, every person in the inn
equal to the task, rushed into Dick's
room with a pail of water. " I'm much
obleeged to ye, to be sure," said Dick,
" but here's more than I want to shave
with!" "Shave with!" quoth mine
host, "you called 'help!' and 'water!'
and we thought the house was on fire."
"Ye told me to call the servant 'hetp,'
and do you think I would cry water
when I meant fire V" " Give it up,"
said the landlord as he led off the line of
buckets.
Anecdote of Gurdon Saltonstall.
Gurdon Saltonstall resigned his func
tions as a preacher for the office of Gov
ernor. A religious sect arose professing
allegiance to Christ only, and acknowl
edging no authority in the civil law.
Among other peculiarities of their creed
was the right to contract marraige with
out tbe sanction of the civil authorities. .
A man named Gorton was their leader.
He appeared before Governor Saltonstall
one day, as his Excellency was smoking
his long pipe, and announced that he
was married to a woman whom he
brought with him and that without the
sanction of the law. The Governor
serenely removed his pipe, and asked ;
'And you are determined to have
this woman for thy wife V
" I am," replied Gorton.
"And you, madam, have taken this
man for your husband V"
'That I have, Sir," was the prompt
reply.
"Then," exclaimed the Governor,
"by the authority and in accordance
with the laws of the State of Connecti
cut, I pronounce you legally man and
wife."
"Gurdon thou art a cunning crea
ture," replied the discomfited Gorton.
