HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
We Invite commnntiMitlnnn from all persona who r
interested lu matters properly buluiiKliitf to this de
partment. Raising Chlokeni.
The great point In raising chickens Is
to keep them eating alt the time, to keep
their digestive organs continually well
supplied. " Short commons " are not
economical in chicken raising. The
common custom la to keep a dish of "In
dian meal dough" mixed up, and two or
three times a day a lot 19 thrown down
to the chickens. If they eat It, well and
good; if not, and the chances are that
they will not, they have become tired of
one single article of diet set before them
day after day, it stands and sours. If a
quantity Is thus found uneaten, the next
feed is likely to be a light one, and the
chickens, driven by hunger, finally de
vour the fine stufT. The result is cholera
or some other fatal disease sets In, and
their owner wonders " why my chick
ens areall dying off V" In our own prac
tice we find that small quantities of var
ied food, if given to the chickens, often
produce vastly better results than any
other method of feeding.
Indian meal dough we banished from
our poultry yards long ago, and on no
conditions would we permit young chick
ens to be fed with It. For the first morn
ing meal we give all our young poultry
stock boiled potatoes, mashed up fine.
We find nothing bo good and acceptable;
and, as we use only the small potatoes
those which are unmarketable and not
large enough for the table they prove
to be more profitable than any other nr.
tical of food.
When In the days gone by, we used to
feed the chickens with the traditional
Indian meal dough, we always counted
on losing a large percentage of them,
and the number that died from cholera,
diarrhoea and kindred diseases were
great. Now a sick chicken Is unknown
to our yards, and we lay our success en
tirely to the disuse of Indian meal
dough. After the potatoes are disposed
of, we give our chickens all the fine
cracked corn they will eat up clean. We
cannot find in the grain stores corn
cracked to the proper degree of fineness,
and we have as a fixture in our large
poultry house, a large-sized cofTee-mlll,
such as grocers use, and we run the corn
through.
Of course large chickens, those which
are ten or twelve weeks old, do not need
such fine ground corn, but the young
birds do. In about two hours after the
cracked corn Is eaten we give all the
wheat screening that the chickens will
eat and in another two hours spread be
fore them a fresh meal of boiled pota
toes. For supper they have all the crack
ed corn and wheat they can eat. The
best systems of feeding, however, will
not avail If the young birds are permit
ted to over run with vermin. They
should be anointed on their heads and
under their wings and on their backs,
once a week with a mixture of equal
parts of lard and kerosene oil , and if
the hens are anointed in the same way
the additional labor will prove remuner
ative. Unless proper management is ex
ercised chicken raising is one of the
most unsatisfactory of employments;
but if it is done systematically it is as
profitable and pleasant as any other bus
iness. Massachusetts Ploughman.
How a Woman Peeled Onions.
There Is more than one way to skin
onions, as well as cats It appears "Bob
the sea cook," spins the following in
structive yarn in the New York Times
of Sunday :
She came on board as pretty as a daisy
and as sweet and fresh as an elegant
make up could make her. There was
chattering aft, on the yacht, as to what
they would have for dinner, and It was
agreed, for fun, that it was chowder,
each one to do something for the same,
'You have got to peel and chop up them
onions," said a dandy kind of a fellow
to the pretty girl. "Agreed" said she
not wincing a bit, and they all laughed,
and pitied her. When the time came
for fixing up things, being urged I
brought that pretty girl a peck of the
fiercest onions, real fed skined ones, you
ever smelled. "There Is going to be a lot
of crying" thinks I; " If that would
be the only sorrow In her life!" Says
she to me; " Mr. Roberts will you haul
me a bucket of water," and I did It.
Then she took off of her fingers a lot
of rings and put them In her pocket and
asked for a knife, and the onions being
id the water, she peeled and sliced them
under water, and nary a tear came, nor
noting. "Now," says she, holding out
the tips of her fingers, " who will be gal
lant enough to kiss these V Seeing I was
cook I did not like to be so bold, but
there was half a dozen of the men who
rushed forward, and of course I had no
chance. That is the way I learned how
ladies can peel onions and not cry over
