It is pretty hard to throw off old
habits all at once. A Nebraska dealer in
agricultural implements "got religion"
and felt it his duty to point out the way
to others, and said to a farmer: "Broth
er Jones, I will guarantee that if you
join our church you will not only find it
the best in the market, but will take you
through without any further inventory.
Give it a trial, and if not satisfactory I
will take bock your religion and refund
your money.
A farmer required a number of
reapers; several presented themselves,
and all were engaged with one excep
tion. The poor man thus omitted said,
" Master, won't you hire me V"
" No," said the farmer.
"Why not."
" Because you are too little."
" Too little 1 " exclaimed Paddy, "does
your honor reap your corn at the top ?"
What could the farmer do but roar with
laughter, and send the little man to join
his comrades in the field ?
r2" While a man was dashing with
all bis might and main down the street
to catch a train one day last week, a
gamin rushed after him and shouted :
" Hey, mister, have you got a pin V"
" I have," responded the man, com
ing to a sudden halt and feeling under
the lappet of his vest. " Well, then,"
yelled the boy, as he jumped out of the
way, " you had better fasten your ears
together behind your head so you won't
smash any swlngin' signs with 'em."
The pedestrian passed on unheedful of
the advice given him.
O" " Please, sir," said Pat, an Irish
Corporal, " I think me horse wants to
roll."
" Very well," said the Captain, " take
off his saddle and let him roll, but you
mind you mount as Boon as he Is
through."
" Yes, sir," suid Pat, saluting and foil
ing iu the rear.
There was a brush with the "John
nies" a few minutes later, and there was
lively work for the next half hour.
When a lull came the Captain saw Pat
sitting quietly on a btump holding his
saddle.
"Where's your horse V" asked the
Captain.
" Down In the field there, sir," an
swered Pat, rising to salute his com
mander. " Didn't I tell you to mount as soon
as he had done rolling V
"Sure you did, Captain, an' it's for
that I'm waiting. He hasn't begun
yet."
It was Pat's last sally of wit. The
poor fellow fell at the next charge.
