THE TIMES NEW BLOOMFIELI), PA.. JULY 8, 1879 8 A Groat Engineering Work Sutiio, Nev., June 80. To-night the mountain topi overlooking the Washoe silver region and the Canon Valley are ahlazo with bonlhes, and the echoed of caunon and discharge of giant powder are heard In every dlrootion. The evont which ia being celebrated U the final completion of the Butro tunnel for the reception of the water from the Comstook mines. After tea years of ceaseless labor day and night, and the expenditure of tlx millions of dollars, the powerful engine of the combi nation shaft of the Hale & Noroross and Savage mines was started up this morning at precisely 0 o'olook, discharging the water Into the Sutto tunnel, at the mouth of which it made its appearanoo in one hour and tweuty minutoB, showing a tem perature at lli'Bt of 101 degrees, which gradually lum-eased to 108 degrees lu eight hours. The water in the long drowned out mines was lowered 100 feet. Every thing worked well. The wooden boxes, constructed of Nevada pine, did not show a leak. No steam escaped from thoni, so that the tunnel showed barely an iucroase of temperature after the hot water was turned on. The water from the Sierra Nevada, Union, Ophir, the lionauza mines, Best aud Delchor, and Gould and Curry will not be turned on for aooupleof weeks, and after all finds its way into the tunnel, it is expected that oue of the double line of boxes will have ample capacity to carry o IV all t lie water. The success of the great engineering work surpasses all expectations. A Savage Rooster Attacks a Child. In Johnstown on Wednesday, as the 14 'mouths old daughter of Samuel Miller, of T that placo, while playing in an alley that runs by her father's resldenco, was at tacked by a large rooster belonging to another citizen of Johnstown. She iu- btiuctively threw herself face downward ou the ground, when the rooster jumped ou her body, striking his sharp spurs into her ueck and pecking at the exposed llesh with his bill. Little Anthouy Wayne, -aged 8 years, was playing in the vicinity, and hearing the ohlld's screams bo bravely Nvent to her rescue. Taking the child iu ais arms the little fellow carried her toward her father's house, the rooster following close behind and occasionally giving a spring and digging Its spurs into the boy's clothing. The attention of a female member of the family was soon attracted, and she went out and drove the rooster away, aud then carried the affrighted child into the house. It was discovered that there was quite a deep hole bohind one of the child's ears and auothor near the temple, both of which wounds bled freely. In a Predicament. The Bethlehem News says : Workmen are now engaged in repairing tho roof of McSbane bell foundry, on North street, and use boiled pitch in their operations. Last night a half barrel of this material in a hard state was left on the sidewalk, and about 10 or 11 o'clock an individual, supposed to be slightly inebriated, took a seat on it and went fast asleep. , His nap lasted for several hours, but about three o'clock this morning the watchman at Adams' Express Company's freight depot, on the other side of the street, heard the fellow cry for assistance, and upon crossing the street found him stuck fast to the pitch and unable to move. The watchman used all his endeav ors to release him, but, like Aunt Jemima's plaster, "the more he tried to pull him off the more he stuck the faster." Finally, after every expedient was exhausted, the watohmau cut the man loose by means of a sharp kuife. Shocking Sight for a Father. The remains of the two young girls burned to death near Jonesboro, Ga., Bun day night, were carried to Covington for interment. Mr. Reynolds is almost a maniac. It required four men to hold him. A new piano made the family unusually gleeful that uight, and the last song was In the Sweet Bye and Bye." The two girls, one nine and the other sixteen, went to bed up stairs. Mr. Reynolds, his wife aud two small children slept below. The frantio father, unable to render other aid, stood outside and shouted to his daughter, as she leaned in the window enveloped in flames, to jump out. They burned to death before his eyes. Reading, April 25. The Miller sensa tion has ended in peace and reconciliation between the parties concerned. The friends who went to Saratoga for Miller returned here this afternoon, excepting the Rev. Ilenry A. Neitz, who went to his home at Germantown, accompanied by Miller, where Miss Neitz will join him in a few days, when the marriage ceremony will take place. The pair will make an extensive wedding trip, not returning here until the excitement has died out. No reason has as yet been assigned for Mil ler's sudden departure.
