These wells do not lu any instance exceed 75 feet In depth ; they are of small bore, and within a radius of twenty miles there are 200 of them. Illinois has 800,000 milk cows. To properly care for them and their products requires the labor of 40,000 men and 00,000 horses, while they de mand for their subsistence the use of over 8,C00,000 acres of land. Their total money value Is placed at $124,800,000. 65" The largest cultivated wheat farm on the globe Is Bald to be the Qrondin farm, not far from the town of Fargo, Dakota. It embraces some 40,000 acres, both Government and railway land, and lies close to the Red river. Divided in to four parts, it has dwelling8,granarles, machine shops, elevators, stables for 200 horses, and room for storing 1,000, 000 bushels of grain. Besides the wheat farm, there Is a stock farm of 20,000 acres. 83T A farmer who has been very suc cessful at raising corn says : Last spring I took no ears that were less then twelve inches in length. Then I took off three inches at the tip end and two Inches at the butt end, and from these central grains I got ears fifteen inches in length and from fourteen to sixteen rows. If farmers would be more careful in select ing their seed corn they would find themselves repaid in the difference of their crops. To Drive Away Rats, My premises, last ear, became awful ly infested with rats. They were every where, burrowing, gnawing and rioting. I procured a quantity of coal tar from the gas works in town, and poured some of it in their holes, and runs, and resorts, wherever I could find a place. It cleared them out in a week's time. They don't like tar, and will not stay where they are liable to get daubed with it. Practical Farmer. Honored and Blessed. When a board of eminent physicians and chemists announced the discovery that by combining some well known valuable remedies, the most wonderful medicine was produced, which would cure such a wide range of diseases that most all other remedies could be dis pensed with, many were skeptical ; but proof of its merits by actual trial has dispelled all doubt, and to-day the dis coverers of that great medicine, Hop Bitters, are blessed and honored by all as benefactors. Breaking In Heifers. T here are often times trouble in get ting young heifers to take kindly to their first milking. A correspondent of the Rural Home tells as follows how he manages them : As the time of the year has come when heifers are coming in that have never been broken to milk, I will send theteaders of the Rural Home my way to break them : Tie them up, and give them a mess to eat while milking, and if they are nervous, take a common surcingle, and put it around the body just before the hips, and in front of the udder, buckle It tight,' sit down close to boss, and go to milking, being careful not to hurt the teats by hard squeezing. At first be gentle, and in a few weeks boss will stand still to be milked. Coffee Grown In Delaware. I was shown on Saturday a sample of coffee grown by Elijah Freeney, color ed, residing one mile and a holf from Seaford. The canes upon which it grows attain a height of from four to to Ave feet. The pericarp, or pod, con taining the seed is two inches and a half in length,-oval in shape, and is of a dark . brown color. They cling al ternately to the joints in the cane. The train resembles the green color of the English coflee, and when fully matured in about the size of a pea. It has a very pleasant odor and Its flavor is mild and rich. To successfully cultivate it re quires, high fertile ground, as experi ment has demonstrated that low land is not adapted to Its growth. The seed was obtained from Wicomico county, Mil., but where It came from originally Mr. Freeney could not tell. Every Eve niny. Newport Advertisements. It. S.
