(ir A Bhort time ago a Danbury man
bad forty dollars stolen from him. Tbe
thief was subsequently struck with
remorse, and sent back twenty dollars,
with a note to the effect that as soon as
be received more remorse he would send
back the rest.
ff?- The bridal Veil originated In tbe
custom of performing the nuptial cere
mony under a square piece of cloth, held
over the bridegroom and bride, to con
ceal the blushes of the latter. At the
marriage of a widow, it was dispensed
with.
A gentleman was once making
fun of a sacque which a young lady
wore. "You bad better keep quiet,"
was the reply, "or I will give you the
'sack'." "I should be most happy,"
was the gallant response, "If you would
give it to me as It Is with yourself
Inside of It."
6S"A little fellow of four, who attends
Infant class In Sunday-school, received
one Sunday morning a card on which
were the words, "Pray without ceas
ing." After bis mother had explained
the text, be said, "I guess I won't show
this to the minister; he prays long
enough now."
0" John Randolph was In a tavern, .
lying on a sofa in the parlor, waiting
for the stage to come to the door. A
dandified chap stepped Into the room
with a Whip in his hand, just come from
a drive, and standing before the mirror,
arranged bis balr and collar, quite un
conscious of the presence of the gentle-,
man on the a sofa. After attudinlzing
awhile he turned to go out, when Mr.
Randolph asked him : "Has the stage
comeV" "Stage, sir! stage 1" said the
fop; "I've nothing to do with it, sir."
"Oh 1 1 beg your pardon," said Ran
dolph, quietly ; "I thought you were
the driver!"
6 Frederick the Great was always
very fond of disputation; but as he gen
erally terminated the discussion by col
laring bis antagonist, and kicking his
shins, few of bis guests were disposed to
enter the arena against him. One day,
when he was even more disposed than
usual for an argument, he asked one of
bis suite why he did not venture to give
his opinion on some particular question.
"It Is Impossible, your Majesty," was
the reply, "to express an opinion before
a sovereign who has such very strong
convictions, and who wears such very
thick boots.
A Good Hint.
Rev. Mr. had traveled far to preach
to a congregation at . After the
sermon he waited very patiently, evi
dently expecting some of the brethren
to invite him to dinner. In this he was
disappointed. One after another depart
ed, until the house was almost as empty
as the minister's stomach. Summoning
resolution, however, he walked up to an
elderly-looking gentleman, and gravely
said : "Will you go borne to dinner with
me, to-day, brother 5"' i
"Where do you live?"
"About twenty miles from this, sir."
"No," said the man, coloring ; "but
you must go with me."
"Thank you I will cheerfully."
After that time the minister was no
more troubled about his dinner.
The Wrong Window.
Some years ago old Judge Dash, of
Maine, accompanied by his wife, visited
New York. The Judge "put up" at the
tavern down by the Battery. Before re
tiring for tbe night, and after Mrs. Dash
had retired, the Judge would have a
bath. Having performed his ablutions,
the Judge looked around for some recep
tacle into which he might turn the
contents of his washbowl.
There was nothing at hand, and
rather than summon a servant, the old
gentleman conceived the Idea of throw
ing the water out of the window.
So, mounting a chair, he opened a
little square window, which he thought
opened into the back yard, and putting
the bowl through it, deliberately emp
tied its contents.
A howl of rage greeted tbe ears of the
good old ju dge, accompanied by female
cries, and loud objurations in a mascu
line voice.
"What in creation are you up to?"
shouted somebody.
"What in creation are you prowling
around atthls timeo'nigbt for V" replied
tbe Judge.
"You ought to be at home with y'r
wife and children."
But tbe poor fellow outside had been
quietly sleeping in bed with his better
half, and tbe little window which the
judge had opened was intended as a
ventilator for both rooms. Tbe judge
'had so completely drowned out his
neighbors that they were obliged to seek
another room.
