A Wayward Girl's Foolish Step.
A dispatch from lMttebttrg says : The
little town of Heaver, one of tho suburbs
of nttsburg, Is terribly exolterl, because
one of Its prettiest, wealthiest, best-known
and really accomplished young ladies has
left her father's bouse and deliberately
married a negro who is as ugly and Ignor
ant as be is black. For some time past
Miss Annie Mason has given her parents a
great deal of trouble by her reckless, way
war.d conduct, but being an ouly daughter
fibe was spoiled by Indulgence. Her father
is United States storekeeper in Indiana
county, but lives in Beaver and is wealthy.
Her uncle Is ex-Chief Justice Daniel
Agnew, of the Supreme Court, and the
family is one of the best in this part of the
Ktate. Mrs. George Jones, nee Miss Annie
Mason, is twenty years old, a brunette with
large eyes and exceedingly pretty face. 8he
bad a quarrel with her parents on Wed
nesday night, aud early yesterday (Thurs
day) morning she left her borne aud met
George Jones, a oourae illiterate negro
coal digger, by an appointment which she
bad made by some unknown means during
the night. At five o'clock in the morning
Jones and another negro, accompanied by
Miss Mason, went to Rochester, about a
mile from Beaver, aud hurried to the
house of a colored clergyman, who married
Jones to Miss Mason in the presence of a
.couple of white men as witnesses. The
couple then took the next train back to
Beaver, where Jones hired a room in a
small bouse which has only three rooms
in it, two of which are already occupied by
negro families. The reckless girl sent
home for the trunk, piano and some of the
ornaments from her room, and this was the
flrst intimation her mother bad of the
marriage. Her mother tried to persuade
her daughter to return, but sho refused.
Her father is not at home and knows
nothing as yet of the afl'air. It Is not
known how Miss Mason became acquainted
with Jones or where she ever met him.
'Threats of tarring and feathering are
openly made by the young men of Beaver,
but up to the present, time nothing has
been done and Mr. and Mrs. Jones are
living in their tiny room, while the way
ward girl's mother is lying at home crazy
with brain fever brought on by her daugh
ier's conduct.
Shocking Accident.
Due of the most singular and shocking
railroad accidents ever recorded in Now
England occurred at the South street
crossing bridge of the Eastern Railroad,
Boston, a few days ago. A bright lad,
Richard Farren, 0 years old, son of Richard
Farren, the well-known soenio artist, re
siding at SO Arlington street, Chelsea, went
to the Second street crossing bridge with
bis brother to play. The boys amused
themselves beneath the track of the rail
road, holding on by the sleepers. . While
in this position be would raise bis bead
above the track to witness an approaching
train and seek a place of safety before the
train reached the bridge. At 5.4-3 p. m.,
the inward train was approaching the
bridge, when the lad changed his position
to the outward track sleepers, probably sup
posing himself to be safe. lie again bad
bis bead above the sleepers, when an out
ward train passed tho bridge and the sharp
prong of the cow-catcber struck the boy's
head, severing it from the body.
Useless Scrubbing.
An extraordinary army joke has found
its way into the columns of' "Tho Court
Journal." The dirtiness of the Afghan is
proverbial, and it is said that upon one oc
casion General Roberts captured a Mongol,
who was so pre tei naturally dirty that it was
thought necessary, for the safety of the
whole camp, that he should be washed.
Two genuine Tommy Atkinses were
told off for this purpose. They stripped
him, and scrubbed him with formidable
brushes aud a large quantity of black soap
for two hours, at the end of which they
threw down their brushes . in disgust and
went to their Colouel.
""What is it, me?'
"Well, sir, we've" washed that Afghan
for two hours, but it wasn't no good. After
scrubbing fcinj," sir, till our arms were like
to break, blest if we didn't come upon
another butt of clothes."
": -. a Startling Discovery.
Hamburg, May 19. This little borough
lias been startled by the finding of a dead
infant in the canal at the live locks, a short
distance below. It was terribly disfigured,
one of the arms and a leg being nearly
severed from the body. A rope was at
tached to the neck, indicating that the
infant bad been murdered. An inquest
this evening was adjourned until to-mor
row, when it is expected au important clue
will be developed. The body bad evidently
been in tue water quite a wuue as St was
greatly decomposed.
Bad Boys Stone a Little Girl to Death.
Boston, Way 19. .Yesterday while a
number of children were at play on the
nunnery grounds in Somerville one of
them, a ten-year-old daughter of William
II. Goodpeed, picked up a ball which
several boys bad been using. Upon refus
ing to return it to one of the boys several
of them pelted her with stones, one of
which struck her on the temple, causing
her death early this morning.
