83 A young lady while on her way
to be married was run over and killed.
A confirmed old maid savagely remark-
ed : "She has avoided a more lingering
and horrible fate."
ffy The beauty of a man's parting his
hair in the middle appears to be that it
gives both ears an equal chance to flap.
Girls who part their hair on the side,
do it to make the head balance, they
finding one side lighter than the other.
(HT Of course no woman ever did such
a thing, but supposing now for the sake
of argument, as it were, that a woman
was to go to church Just for the purpose
of showing off her new sacque, would it
be sac-rellgious, so to speak ?
Bjy An English boy was beating a
donkey unmercifully, when the minister
of the parish coming up censured him
for his cruelty. The lad resentfully
retorted: "I'm sure you need not care;
it's hone of your oongregatlon."
35 A little boy had one day done
wrong and he was sent; after paternal
correction, to ask in secret the forgive
ness of his Heavenly Father. His
offence was passion. Anxious to hear
what he would say, his mother followed
to the door of the room. In lisping
accents she heard him ask to be mode
better ; and then, with childlike sim
plicity, he added, , "Lord, make ma's
temper better too."
Didn't Like tbe Remedy.
A Boston lady who contemplated
purchasing a homestead in North Caro
lina, wrote to an old settler In that
vicinity asking if it was true.as reported,
that the grass in that country was In
fested with "jiggers" that creep Into the
flesh. The reply was: "Yes; but all
you have to do is to keep your legs
greased and they won't trouble you."
She concluded not to buy.
A gipsy man was recently at con
fession one day, and while he . was
confessing he spied in the pocket of the
monk's habit a silver snuff-box, and
stole it. "Father,"he said immediately,
"I accuse myself of having stole a silyer
snuff-box." "Then, my son, you must
certainly restore it." "Will you have
it yourself, my father ?" "I ? Certainly
not, my son ?" '"The fact Is," proceeded
the gipsy, "that I have offered it to the
owner, and he has refused it." "Then
you can keep it with a good conscience,"
answered the father.
U3TAn Englishman, "who had seen
better days," was riding in the coach to
Leadvllle, the new mining town in
Colorado. "Will you please," said the
Englishman, "open that window; I
want to see the mountain scenery." An
Irishman, who was snoozing in a corner
looked up on hearing the remark and
observed, "Bedad, yu'll see plinty ov It
in a month from now, when ye're
comln' back on fut."
0A story told by Governor Vance
is about an old publican in the "Old
North State" who had suffered much
from the raldB of both parties, and came
to the conclusion that the safest way
was to play neutral. One day his house
was filled with Federal soldiers, and
some of them catechised him as to his
political faith.
"Old man are you a reb ?"
"No."
"Are you Union 5"'
"No." . '
"Then, what are you V"
"Well, I'm nothing, and d-d little of
