Lee asked a straggler one day, whom he found eating green per simmons, if he did not know they were unfit for food. "I'm not eating them for food, General," replied the man. I'm eating them to draw my stomach. up to fit my rations." trDean Stanley never gesticulates In the pulpit, and on one occasion his glove, which was left on his head when be removed bis hat, remained there during the entire service, somewhat to . the embarrassment of the decorous congregation. A little girl at school read thus : 'The widow lived on a limbacy left her by a relative." "What did you call that word ?" asked the teacher; "the word is legacy, not limbacy." "But," said the little girl, "my sister says I must say limb, not leg." tT Drilling her class in poetry, the teacher quoted from familiar lines of Tennyson : "You must wake and call me early, call me early, mother, dear." When he saw the jury before which he was to be tried, about equally divided between white and black, he exclaimed, "For God's sake don't let them niggers try ine." Efforts were made to pacify him, but he insist ed that "niggers would hang a man just to see him kick." t3T A small boy in town had seen his mother's fur muff that had been badly eaten with moths. Shortly afterwards he was in his father's stable watching the process of currying bis pet pony. With tears in his eyes the little fellow rushed into the house and exclaimed, "Oh, mammal mammal the moths have got into my pony, and I'm afraid he's ruined. ty A young lady was sitting with a gallant captain in a charming decorated recess. On her knee was a diminutive niece, placed there pour le convenances. In the adjoining room, with the door open, were the rest of the company.
