HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN.
We tnvlts rommuniratloYis frnni nil persons who are
lnt'Tpntd iu ui.ttHi-a proparly belontf luv tu this de
partment. The Use of Kerosene.
We are again called upon to Indite a
paragraph upon the proper use of kero
sene or coal oil about the fowl-house
premises. This Is a valuable article in
Its way, when Judiciously handled and
applied sensibly to the cleansing of nest
boxes, the roosts of fowls, and for the
removal of scurvy upon the legs of
these birds.
But kerosene is a powerfully pungent
substance, and should always be used
with care. For washing the fowl roosts
occasionally, nothing Is so certain to
keep the perches free from lice. For the
bottom and sides of box-nests, used
either for your layers or Bitters, there is
no article so good or so sure to disperse
vermin and keep it away from those
spots frequented by the liens.
But kerosene should be applied be
neath the nests, upon the woodwork
only. It is to strong and penetrating to
be placed where it will come in direct
contact with the eggs that are being set
on, or to touch the bodies of the fowls.
And where it is carelessly or too pro
fusely scattered or so that the hen sits
on it or the eggs may be touched with this
liquid It does more harm than good,
often permeating the shells and destroy
ing the embryo chicks, as we have
known the instances to occur.
We therefore suggest caution in the
use of this artlcle,as we have done before
on repeated occasions. We know of no
agent more beneficial, when rightly
used, than this is. But if it be not
'properly applied to the purposes we
have mentioned, it had far better be
dispensed with altogether. If the eggs
are smeared with it at any time when
first laid, or while being set on by hens
their vitality is as surely destroyed as
they would be if punctured or crushed
in the shells. Poultry World.
Controlling Vicious Horses.
A new and very simple method of
training vicious horses was exhibited in
West Philadelphia recently, and the
manner in which some of the wildest
horses were subdued was astonishlug.
The first trial was that of a kicking, or
"bucking" mare, which her owner Bald
had allowed no rider on her back for a
period of at least five years. She became
tame and gentle in about as many min
utes, and allowed herself to be ridden
about without a sign of her former wlld
nesB. The means by which the result
was accomplished consisted of a piece
of light rope, which was passed around
the front Jaw of the mare, Just above
the upper teeth, crossed in her mouth
and thence secured, back of her neck.
It was claimed that no horse will kick
or jump when thus secured, and that a
"bucking" horse, after receiving the
treatmenta few times, will abandon his
vicious way forever. A very simple
method was also shown by which a
kicking horse could be shod. It consist
ed in connecting the animal's head and
tail by means of a rope fastened to the
tail and then to the bit, and drawn
tightly enough to incline the horse's
head to one side. This, it is claimed,
makes it absolutely impossible for the
horse to kick on the side of the rope.
At the same exhibition, a horse, which
for many years had to be bound on the
ground to be shod, suffered the black
smith to operate on him without at
tempting to kick while secured in the
manner described.
Worm In a Horse's Eye.
Wednesday about noon John Mo
Koane, living near Pontlao, came to
town to have a worm cut out of his
horse's eye. The day being very dark
and stormy, the operation was deferred
till Thursday, when Dr. J. J Taylor
chloroformed the horse and very suc
cessfully cut into the eye and extracted
the worm. It measured exactly two
inches in length, and is the size round
of a small pin. At its head is seen,
under a low maguifler, two hooks. . The
worm is called thread-worm or fllacla.

Women Never Think I
If the crabbed old bachelor who uttered
this sentiment could but witness the
intense thought, deep study and thor
ough investigation of woman in deter
mining the best medicines to keep
their fumilies well, and would note their
sagacity and wisdom in selecting Hop
Bitters as the beet, and demonstrating it
by keeping their families in perpetual
health, at a mere nominal expense, he
would be forced to acknowledge that
such sentiments are baseless and false.
