Wood Ashes for Peach Trees.
I have never known a person Mho
would dlpute the RBsertlon with which
the chapter on peaches In Thotnm
lYult CulturM opens, that "the peach,
when in perfection, Is the most delicious
fruit of our climate." Unfortunately,
the disease known as yellows, and the
enemy known as the peach-borer, make
It, in many localities, one of the most
dlflcult of fruits to grow. For several
years I have used wood ashes about my
peach trees with lnaVked success In
obviating these two evils. About
peck of fresh ashes is applied each
spring and fall about the stem of the
tree hi a little conical mound, that pre.
vlously so placed being spread upon the
soil when a new application is made.
The conical mound prevents the attack
of the borer, and the dressing of ashes
upon the soil stimulates the vigor of the
tree, so that it Is enabled to resist the
disease. But this must be accompanied
by regular shortenlng-ln of the last
year's growth, and by thinning of the
fruit, to prevent overbearing, which
exhausts the tree and leaves it an easy
prey to disease. A case of yellows occa
sionally, though rarely, appears in my
orchard, as must be expected where a
disease is constitutional, but by this
treatment peaches are now successfully
grown where their cultivation was for a
long time abandoned. Cor. Country
Gentleman.
Prize Crops.
A gentleman of Boston has made an
otter to the farmers' boys of York oounty,
Maine, which will doubtless stimulate
interest in agriculture, and aid in train
ing a class of enterprising young far
mers. He offers prizes the first of $100,
the second of $50, and five prizes of $10
each for the largest crop of Indian
corn on lots of one-eighth of an acre
each. The conditions are that the con
testants must have lived in York county
at least two years ; must be under seven
teen years of age on the 1st of June;
must enter their names with the presi
dent of the York County Agricultural
Society on or before May 1st; must do
the work themselves, except that they
may have help to drive the team in
ploughing or cultivating; and must at
the end of the season make a report,
giving a detailed account of the land
used, and of their processes of cultiva
tion. They may use as much of any
kind of fertilizer as they please. The
corn is to be measured under the direc
tion of the president of the county agri
cultural society, whose decisions and
awards must be final. If such prizes
were offered to boys of other States, the
effect would soon be seen in improved
methods of cultivation.
Hiot on Churning.
An experienced dairyman states that
he considers the critical point in the
process of churning, in order to make
good butter, is just when the butter and
buttermilk begin to separate. Two or
three gallons of cold, strong brine added
to the churning at this moment, he
claims, wonderfully facilitates the pro
cess, and improves the condition of the
butter ; the warmer the cream the more
brine is needed and the more important
this part of the work. He also suggests
that only brine should be used in wash
ing the butter.
New Way to Cook Chickens,
Cut the chicken up, put in a pan and
cover it over with water ; let it stew as
usual, and when done make a thicken
ing of cream and flour, adding a piece
of butter and pepper and salt Have
made and bake a pair of short cakes,
made as for pie crust, but roll thin and
cut in small squares. This is much
better than chicken pie and more sim
ple to make. The crusts should be laid
on a dish and the chicken gravy poured
over while both are hot.
tJ3T Fat bacon, chopped fine and
sprinkled plentifully with black pepper,
is a convenient and reliable remedy for
cholera in chickens. Last summer a
number of hens were cured by its use.
When found, they had dropped from
the roost ; they were so far gone that
they could not get up, and were only able
to raise their heads occasionally. They
were given a comfortable shelter by
themselves ; a teaspoonful of the mixture
was forced down the throat of each bird,
morning and evening. No other atten
tion was paid them. At the end of the
third day they were set at liberty and
went about as usual, giving no further
trouble. Water may be placed where
they can help themselves, but no food
is required. Smaller doses may be
given in cases less severe.
