THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM FIELD, PA., APItlL 22, 1870.
Remarkable Case of Petrifaction.
1'iTTsnuno, April 13. During the sum
mer of 1876 Benjamin Blngerly, Esq., for a
number of years State Printer and proprie
tor of " Tlie Btate Journal," died audden
ly at lila resldenoe this olty. Mr. Blngerly
was a very heavy man, weighing 008
pouuds. Six professional pall-bearers were
present at the funeral to guard against ac
cident. The casket was of walnut, seven
feet three inohes long by three Teet wide,
and was placed in a heavy stone box,
securely fastened. Borne mouths since, the
rolatives In Philadelphia oonoluded to have
the remalus removed to Laurel Hill Ceme
tery, where his parents and friends are
burled. The work of raising the body was
commeuoed, and to the surprise of those
who bad undertaken the job, no offensive
odor prevailed as they approached the cas
ket. An effort was made to raise the body,
but this was found almost impossible on
account of the extraordinary weight. Still
greater was the surprise at this, and it was
decided to raise the lid of the casket. Im
nglne their amazement upon finding that
the body had undergone petrification, and
assumed the color of common brown store
paper. The entire face and form seemed
one entire mass of stone chiseled from
the block. Not one of the features or
lineament, except the eyes, which were
sunken, were out of place, or unnatural
iu the slightest degree. Even the shirt,
coat, boots and pants were intact. The
..'emalns were then placed in a stout casket
Xor tansportation, when It was found the
weight was 925 pounds. They were ship,
ped to Philadelphia per Adams Express,
and interred by the relatives Immediately
upon arrival there.
Shaffer, the Wife Murderer, Attempts Sui
cide. A Chambersburg dispatch of Monday
last says : " Shortly before 8 o'clock this
morning it was discovered by the prison
authorities that Hezekiah Shaffer, who is
to be hanged on Thursday next for the
murder of his wife last summer the par
ticulars of which you have already pub
lished had made an attempt to commit
suicide, by opening the main arteries on
his arms and legs with a piece of very
sharp wire, which he had iu some way
taken from a broom left in his cell on some
occasion. The prison physician was at
once called iu, and the flow of blood was
stopped. Had Shaffer made the attempt
in the night time the gallows, no doubt,
would have been cheated out of one of its
victims. He was reported to be delirious
at noon, but it is thought be will recover.
A strict watch is kept over him now, of
course."
A San Francisco Mystery.
San Francisco, April 14. JoBiah Bacon,
treasurer of the Goodyear Dental vulcanite
company, of Boston, who came here a
short time ago from the east, was found on
the floor of his room at Baldwin's hotel
yesterday afternoon, with a pistol shot
wound in his abdomen. He had been dead
several hours. No firearm was found in
his rooms, and, as the hemorrhage was
entirely internal, there was no means of
judging of his movements subsequent to
the fatal shot and nothing has as yet
transpired to throw any light on the affair.
He was a native of Massachusetts, aged
forty-five years.
More Virginia Judges to be Indicted.
Ricn.M0ND, Va., 11. There is good
authority for stating that the recent action
of United States Judge Rivers in iudicting
county judges in his (western) district for
not having mixed juries in their courts,
will be followed by a similar movement in
this (eastern) district and that the United
States district attorney will, probably to
morrow, present the names of a number of
county judges for indictment.
Plowing up Gold Coins.
A farmer named Joseph Keetor, residing
near Deep creek, Norfolk county, Va.,
while plowing on Wednesday last in an
old field that had not been under cultiva
tion for several years, unearthed au iron
chest containing several thousand dollars
.in American gold coin of dates as far back
as 1S30. The chest is believed to have'
been buried during the last war. Mr.
Keetor is a poor man, and the treasure is
very acceptable.
Railway Rates Reduced.
Ht. Louis, April 15. As a result of the
recent breaking of the Southwestern pool
St. Louis roads have reduced the rates to
nd from St. Louis and Missouri river
points about as follows : Lumber to Mis
souri river points, from fifteen to five cents
per hundred ; cattle from the West, from
tifty to twenty dollars per oar ; wheat and
corn, from twenty and fifteen cents to
oight cents per hundred.
C3T So severe was the storm on the
prairies, oue day last week, that traius on
Iudianapolis and St. Louis road were trou
bled to make headway between Quiucy and
DeWitt. The gale struck a freight train,
ripped the roof from the top of one box
car, carried it into a field some distance,
and roofs of other cars were damaged.
