Masked Burglars Stab a Young Lady and
Escape.
At the residence of Henry Itottcnstliie,
in 1'ottsgrove twp., Berks Co., a soene was '
enncted on Monday tilght that very ranch
resembled murder. Tho family, consisting
of father, mother, several sons and daugh
ters retired for tho night at about twenty
minutes past eight. They had a small dog
which Is generally left in the kitohen dur
ing tho night, but Mouday night ho was
left in the dluing-room. The family had
not been up stairs more than ten minutes
when the dog net up a terrible barking in
the room below. ,
Not thinking that anything was wrong,
one of the daughters, Darned Sallie, started
down stairs to lot the dog out of the room.
When she opened the stair door leading
into the dining-room she was confronted by
three young men, one of whom immediate
ly knocked the lamp out of her hand, and
stabbed her twice iu the leg above thekueo,
cutting two ugly gashes about six inches
long. She at once began to scream and
started up stairs, bolting the door after her.
Instead of the would-be murderers de
camping they tried tholr best to get up
stairs, but the bolted door debarred their
further progress. The family up stairs iu
the meantime mado free use of their lungs
and tho cry of "murder" rang out on the
night air. II. B. Daub, of Pottstown, and
Dauicl Bornesraau, of Limerick, who were
spending tho evening at a house about a
quarter of a mile distant, and others hear
ing the terrible cry at ouce went to the
.rescue. When near the houso they called
to know what was the matter, when the
answer, " Help, for God's sake, some one
is in the house trying to murder us 1"
They needed no further entreaty, but at
once mado for the house. Arriving there,
they found that the rascals bad escaped.
It is supposed that they bad seoreted them
selves in the cellar some time during the
day, and when the family had retired they
proceeded to carry out their villainous de
signs, whatever tbey may have beeu, per
haps robbery or even murder. Miss Hot
tenstine says that she distinctly recognized
Aier assailant and knows him well.
Traglo End of a Stolen Ride.
When the Atlantic express, which
-eaches Ilarrisburg about 11 o'clock P. M.,
was passing Huntingdon on Saturday even
ing a week, a youog man wbose name we
understand to be Kerwick, boarded the
train between the mail and express cars,
for the purpose of stealing a vide. As the
whistle was blown for Mount Vernon he
attempted to alight before the station
was reached in order to avoid discovery.
Owing to the darkness be failed to see a
freight car standing on the adjoining track,
the corner of which struck him and hurled
back under the wheels of the train. His
awful shriek of agony was heard distinctly
by the passongers. When picked up it
was discovered that in addition to a deep
hole in bis side made by the corner of the
freight car ouo of his legs was cut off.
The accident occurred between 7 and 8
o'clock P. M., and death followed at 4
o'clock Sunday morning. We are inform
ed that the youngjnan belongs to a highly
respectable family of Huntingdon.
A Tramp Hanged by a Mob.
Cincinnati, March 10, There has been
considerable excitement at Newport, Ky.,
all day on account of the arrest of Peter
Klein, the tramp, who outraged Mrs.
TruoBdale a few days since. ' A crowd
gathered in the neighborhood of the jail
early to-day, but no demonstration was
made uutil six o'clock this evening when
about tweuty-tlve men marched through
Monmouth street to the jail, overpowered
the jailer, knocked down two policemen
and the mayor, secured Klein and marched
off. Klein was taken to Mrs. Truesdale'a
house and indentilled by her and then
to the woods and undoubtedly hanged,
although at this time the body bns not
been found.
Didn't Know It was Loaded.
Vincent Fallon, eleven years of age, re
siding at 1234 north Fifteenth street, and
Joseph Perrine, of 1250 north Fifteenth
street, together with several other boys,
were rehearsing a theatrical performance
yesterday morniug, in whioh Perrine as
sumed the villain's roll. During the mock
representation Perrine drew a pistol upon
Fallon and pulled the trigger, the ball
lodging in his companion's neck, causing
his almost instant death. Fallon's body
was removed to his late residence and Per
rine arrested. The latter claims that he
was not aware of tho weapon being loaded.
Philadelphia North American.
Blown to Pieces with Nytro-glycerlne.
Red Rock, Pa., March 25. At about 3
o'clock this afternoon an uuknown man,
evidently intoxicated, staggered through
the streets, carrying on his shoulder a bag
containing eight quart cans of glycerine.
Fifteen minutes later t'e town was shaken
and the inhabitants terribly frightened by
a most terriflo explosion. Investigation
revealed tho fact that the man had slipped
down, causing the explosion, which scat
tered fragments of bis body in every
direction. All that could be found of him
would not fill a collnr box.
