THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM FIELD, VA.. MAltCH 11, 1870.
A Clever Thief.
Two young men, according to a Paris
paper, were reoontly seated In front of a
cufe on the Boulevardo, when one of them
unmcd Lucein W., informed his frleud
that he had just come into possesion of
!i,000 francs, adding thnt the (J,000 francs
in bunk notes, were safely locked up iu a
drawer in bis room, and he should not
then trouble himself witli business. lie
1iad a sum of fifty francs in his pocket,
with which he proponed that he and his
friend should go to Asniers and enjoy
tbeaittolves with boating, dining, a ball
etc., and not return until two o'clock in the
morning.
At the table close to thorn was a well
dressed man, who, although apparently
absorbed in the petusel of his journal, did
not lose a word of the conversation. He
was an accomplished thief, named It., alias
"The Aspic," who had but recently re
turned from a tour in the provinces, which
lie bad found necessary to make iu order
to withdraw himself from the observation
of the police. The bait of 5,000 francs
was too tempting for him to resist, and he
immediately resolved to obtain possession
or it.
Having noticed that Lucian W., had
placed bis hat on a stool at a short distance
from him, the Aspio adroitly substituted
hiB own for it, and after paying for what
be had takeu, walked out. He knew that
iho 5,000 francs were deposited in a
drawer iu the young man's room, and the
address of the room he hoped to And by
Cleans of the name at the bottom of the
, hat. Seeing the hatter's address he went
to his Bbop and told him that bo bad on
.-leaviug a restaurant, taken a bat that did
not belong to bim, and which be was
auxious to return to the owner, if the
hatter happened to know the address of
..the customer.
The information was readily obtained,
and in a vory short time after the thief had
.paid bis visit to the apartment of Lucieu
W., and gained possession of the money.
About an hour after the young man came
to the hatter's also, and was informed of
what had occurred, but, not thinking of
any danger for his money, bo merely
bought a hat, and with his friend proceed
ed to Asniers.
On his return home at night he discov
ered his loss. Information was immedi
ately lodged with the police, and, from
, the description of the mau Riven by the
liiatter, he was, on the following day,
arrested while on a party of pleasure,
which he had also devi.scd with some
friends, to the river side. In his pockets
were found the 5,000 franca, minus 400
francs, which he had expended.
The Habit of Kissing Children.
When any person of either sex, or of
any condition, sees a small child walking
or running about in charge of a nurse, be
(or she, generally she,) counts it his priv
ilege to kiss tbe child, if he happens to be
pleased with its appearance, liven if be
is hot pleased, he feels well-nigh obliged,
should be be polite, to caress the "dear
little thing," because he conceives it to be
a sort of duty which contemporaries owe
to the rising generation, It is singular
liow this custom of greeting small children,
under all circumstances, should have
grown up. Entire strangers to the family,
not loss than its friends, seem to think this
kissing imperative. A good-looking nicely
dressed child caunot be seen in a hotel, on
the promenade, or in any of the parks,
without incurring the habitual embrace
from a number of men and women of high
And low degree. That it is an imperti
nence, to say the least cannot be denied ;
that it is a habit which many parents
deplore, and try in vain to correct, is
widely known. It is most undesirable,
nor is it safe, this wholesale, indiscriminate
kissing. Imagine how children themselves
most suffer. It 18 one of their wrongs
that has not been sutBcienty insisted on.
It is not improbable that they have often
Jieen made ill by running tbe gauntlet of
Tom, Dick and Harry, or Jane,Mary and
.Sarah. Tbe custom is more established
here than in any other country, and it is
time it should be discontinued. Nobody
has any right to kiss a child unless invitod
to do so by its parents, and this should be
understood. 1
- --. . . .
Singular Accident.
Levi Wagenseller, of Philadelphia, while
eating dinner, let bis false teeth slip part
way down his throat. A physician told
him to drink a glass of gin, which might
make the teeth and their rubber plate pass
into tbe stomach, where tbey would remain
until dissolved ; but they only went a little
farther down and lodged immovable, in
uch a way as to prevent anything pass
ing into the stomach, lie lived seven
weeks without food, and died of 6turvatlou.
Rewarding a Heroine.
A young lady named Quinn, living near
C'apa, found a broken rail on tbe line of
the Chicago and Lake Huron Rail
road. Bhe promptly "flagged" an ap
proaching mail train, and probably tbertby
prevented a terrible disaster. The receiver
of the road gave her a 1,000 miles ticket
as a reward.
