Malison's Bird Story.
Mr. Manson, Oil Shanklin and the
writer were sitting patiently waiting
for oysters at an eating place, when
Manson said: '
"Shanklin, can you tell a young
female canary bird from a male one?"
"No, Mr. Manson, I cannot," replied
Shanklin, aud cocking his eyeglass on
his dexter optic, said, "Can jjou ?"
"Yes," stoutly spoke up Manson.
"You feed the young birds with angle
worms, and the male birds will invaria
bly eat the male worms and the female
birds the female worms."
"But how in the happy land, Man
son, can you tell the sex of the worms."
"Shanklin," solemnly said Manson,
"I was telling you a bird story, not a
worm narrative."
Kissing by Proxy.
Some time since one of the brightest
and wittiest of Cincinnati's girls went
abroad, and when she returned home,
about the first person to congratulate
her on her safe return was B a
young blood of the city, whose dollars
exceed his sense in the ratio of about a
million to one.
"Aw, Miss X ," he said, "permit
me to greet you. I know you have had
a very pleasant trip abroad."
"Yes," she answered, "very pleaent
indeed. I was all over the continent
and through England, Scotland and
Ireland."
"Ah, in Ireland; and did you see the
Blarney stone ?"
"Yes, I was there."
"Oh, I should so delight to see it. It
has always been a desire of mine to kiss
that celebrated stone, but I have never
had the opportunity."
"Indeed, then you should."
"I know, but I have not done so, but
why shouldn't I kits it by proxy?
You have been there and kissed it, why
should I not take the influence of the
Blarney from your lips?" and the
smart Aleck stepped forward to proxify
the young lady. But she drew back,
and looked him square in the face, said :
"I beg your pardon, my dear Mr.
B , but I sat upon the Blarney
stone."
Like a man with a great sorrow,
B sank down in a heap, and he
hasn't said "Ireland" since, and the
very word "Blarney" makes him delirious.
