A dinner, who for several yenr took
the first prize for potatoes, whs naked
one day the reason why lila potatoes
were so much better than others.
" There Is no magic about It," he said:
"thorough plowing or digging of the
soil, a careful choice of need, a frequent
stirring of the surface, and every weed
pulled up these are the secrets of suc
cess." Tallow for Wagon Grease.
There is nothing better or chenper.
Melt the tallow slowly In an old pot or
drlpping-,pan, putting In enough to
make It one-third full or less when melt
ed. Fill the vessel with coal-oil and set
it out of .doors to cool. Pour off what
oil remains on the top, and you will
bave a splendid grease for all kinds of
wagons and of Just the right consisten
cy, whether the weather be hot or cold.
It will take much less coal-oil in sum
mer than In winter. Be sure to use
enough coal-oil to have a little remain
ing on top after the tallow settles to the
bottom. In summer the oil should be
poured off on a cool morning or your oil
will be thin. Farm Journal.
Origin of Clawson Wheat.
A St. Lawrence county (N. Y.) sub
scriber desires some information con
cerning the origin of Clawson wheat,
now so extensively cultivated in this
country: Garret B. Clawson, of Ovid,
Seneca county, (N. Y.,) was crossing a
neighbor's wheat stubble some twelve
years ago, and found a head of wheat
that attracted his attention. He sowed
it by itself and raised a pint of wheat;
sowed the pint and raised 39 pounds ;
sowed the 30 pounds and had eleven doz
en bundles, which yielded 131 bushels;
next year he had 130 dozen, yielding 150
bushels; next year 254 dozen and 300
bushels of wheat. (A dozen of sheaves
in shock are usually expected to yield
one bushel). A sample of a crop of 92i
bushels by measure, weighing 02 pounds
per bushels, from one and four-fifth, acres
was exhibited at th9 Beneca county fair
in 1871. Since then the Clawson wheat
has spread over a large extent of soil and
climate, preserving all its original char
acteristics, and thus proving itself a dis
tinct variety and no "sport." W. I.
Chamberlain, of Ohio, reports that his
yield was 46 bushels per acre on ten
acres, and 00 bushels per acre an three
acres, beating both the Treadwell and
Fultz. It has a large, white berry that
does not harden up after cutting as soon
as other kinds, but cures well either in
the sheaf or in flour after grinding. The
Clawson lacks in gluten and is improv
ed by being mixed with red wheat.
American Cultivator.
Salt In Agriculture.
Few persons realize the value of salt
in agricultural operations. In large
doses it is of course an injury, destroy
ing everything vegetable it comes in
contact with. In heavy soil it is also
an Injury, as the tendency is to make it
still heavier, and thus whatever good it
might have in one respect is out-weighed
by theOther. But inlightsandy soils,
or those elevated tracts of land not wet,
but which are liable to become dry in
the summer-time, it has been found of
the greatest benefit, and this chiefly on
account of the property it has of absorb
ing moisture from the earth in dry
weather. It is for this as much as for
any chemical quality that it proves so
beneficial in those cases. Usually wheat
does best on rather heavy though not
wet lands; but where salt has been used
on light soils, as good crops have been
gathered as on the most favored heavy
soils. In the far Western States, where
rain does not fuM. often, and the danger
of crops is chiefly through droughts in
the summer-time, salt in light doses
ought to prove beneficial ; and in the
sandy soils of Delaware, Maryland and
Virginia, it might be employed to a
much greater extent than now with
profit. It is chiefly for the moisture if
seems to draw from the atmosphere that
it is often found of so much good for-as-paragus.
The asparagus requires an im
mense deal of water in the make-up of
its stalks, though it does not like to
grow in wet ground; aud this moisture
the salt supplies. It has also been found
of benefit in raising turnips, beets, cab
bage, and other succulent vegetables.
But it must not be forgotten that it is
an injury in soils already wet or heavy;
and therefore, good as it is in many
cases, as indiscriminate use of it will re
sult in disadvantage. In this respect it
is like lime and some other things, In
which evep salt "will cot save it."
