Lon don, Dec 24th. The weather is se vere throughout Great Britain. There bus also been a heavy snowfall here and in many parts of the continent. In Keotlaud it is especially severe, and all the railways in the north are blocked. Two London mail trains were at the last accounts snow ed up ten or twelve miles from Aberdeen. Altogether seven trains are snowed up and the traffic is suspended. The snow was still falling last uijiht. Iu some places it is over twelve feet high, lc is the heaviest snowfall in thirty years. A telegram from Geueva, Switzerland, nays : " No post has arrived from Germany or from German Switzerland. The rail way commuuicatious between Berne and Lausanne were interrupted until late last evening, and the service between Bouveret and St. Maurice is entirely suspended." Loudon, December 23. There is - more snow on the Vosges than the oldest inhabitants remember. Dying With a Pardon in His Hands. Columbus, O., Deo, 15. John Smith was pardoned by Gov. Bishop, Friday. Smith came from Wood County three years ago with a sentence of fifteen years hanging to his ueck, and a future dark with the gloom of despair and death staring at him from the portals of the prison. Daring the past year he bad suffered much from con sumption, and it was for the reason that he bad not long to live that the Governor pardoned him. On Ftiday evening, when Warden McWbnrter handed the poor fel low his pardon, he read it, kissed it, and then died, with a smile on his face, and the long-looked-for pardon clutched in his hand. Yesterday his body was put in a rough pine box, and buried in the O. P. graveyard. Last evening a lady, richly dressed and heavily veiled, called at the prison, and excerciting ber right as the wife of the deceased convict, had the body dUintered, and departed with it. A Nice Pair of Deacons. Burton and Aikons, deacons in the same Campbcllite church in Robard, Ky., loved each other's wife. They did not hide their sentiments from each other, but endeavor ed to settle the difficulty amicable by ex changing wives. An agreement to that effect was made in writing and signed. The wives were away on a visit when this bargain was made, aud were informed of it on their return. Mrs. Burton readily as sented, and it is suspected that she had advised the trade ; but Mrs. Aikensobject ed, and the plan failed. Another Bank Winds Up. Wilkebbabbe, Pa., December 23 At a meeting of the stockholders of the Wilkes barre savings bank to-day it was decided to wind up the affairs or that institution. The directors say this step was taken be cause of the ruinously excessive tales of bank taxation and the dullness of business. Tbs depositors will be paid in full and the stockholders will be reimbursed in the near future. Calendar for 1879. m 1 i hi TA Bar. Apr. Bay Jnn .,,..
