THE TIMES, NEW BL00M11EL1), PA., DECEMBER 3, 1878. 8 A Novel Wedding Soone. Melissa Underwood, residing about eight miles from Vlnoenties, Intl., has been re ceiving attention from two young men one P. II. Donavnn, a farmer, the other Wm. A; rod, a Miller. Being uncertain which to nutke hnppy, she virotnlRod each oue to marry him, but Anally agreed with Ayres that she would marry blm provided ho would keep It secret from Donavan. On AVednesday they perjured the service of a magistrate and went to the residence of the gill, and tho justice oommonoed the coromivny, when Donavan, the othor lover, appenred unexpootcdly upon the scene having received a hint of what was going on. Thou commenced a turmoil and con fusion. Donavan grabbed the girl around tho waist, exolaiming : "Oh, Melissa, don't you consent, for yon know you promised Die llrst." Ayres had the half-marrlod girl around tho waist, and called to the justice to go on. They pulled and hauled the poor girl about for somo minutes, but she was dually released, but the Justice refused to proceed further, and the two would-be bridegrooms departed, one of them hnlf-married and the other not mar ried at all. Houses on Poor Foundations. The outskirts of Scranton, in the region of the Dollevue colliery, one of tho most valuable of the Delaware, Lackawanna mid Western Company's mines, Is threat ened with a terrible disaster. There is little doubt that the mine is caving in. The first indication of the coming crash was felt a few days ago, in what is know among miuers as a "squeeze," which caus ed several of the props sustaining the roof to give way. This was followed by the falling of a largo area of tho worked out portion of the mine. Sevoral houses were disturbed and lost their balance badly by the shock, and a large chasm suddeuly appeared in the roadway traversing the unsettled region. Wells are drying up, aud great Assures continue in close prox imity to many of the dwellings. The plienomeuon is said to have started in a portion of the mine worked out about twenty years ago, and loft without proper support of roof. It has now extended to the most valuable part of the colliery, and thrown about 200 men out of employment, in addition to creating a small panto among tho minors' huts over head. Very Cheap Fura. A prominent dealer in Auburn, N. Y., placed a set of ladies' furs, wolf robes, and a valuable overcoat in two or three empty whisky barrels, to protect them from the ravages of the moths during the past sum mer. The articles were placed in the re ceptacles unknown to tho employees of the establishment. During the past month the casks have been sold to parties from all parts of the country, for cider purposes. The other day the owner of the goods thought it would be well, now that winter was fast advancing, to remove the furs, robes, etc. He went into the storehouse, and after searching in vain for the vessels containing the valuables he called one of the men into the office, and inquired of him what disposition had been made of them. To bis astonishment he learned that they were placed in the pile of barrels that were for sale and disposed of to un know parties at $3 each. A Beastly Parent. Joseph M. Stambaugh, of Pike town ship, Stark co., O., was arrested Friday upon the affidavit of his eighteen year old daughter, charging him with raping her person on the afternoon of Thursday last. The accused was given a perliminary hear ing Saturday before Mayor Shimp, the only witness appearing against him being the victim of his beastly lust. The raping took place in a small shanty belonging to coal miuers near the residence of the inhu man father. The monstor accomplished his iufatnous purpose by drawing a revol ver on the girl and threatening instant death if tihe did not submit to bis baso demauds. In default of one thousand dol lars bail, Stambaugh was committed to jail, to appear before the court of common pleas. tW Advices to the London Times say that a prolonged drouth has brought the inhabitants of the Philipine islands to a state of starvation, and their destitution has been intensified by the ravages of locusts, which have cleared of! the rem nants of the maize aud vegetable crops. Many of the people subsist on roots, other food being unprocurable. In some districts the streams and wells have dried up under the influence of the intense heat and the want of rain. The inhabitants of the Masbate district have to go three miles in search of water. The appearance of the swarms of locusts, following here, as in India and other countries,on severe drouth, seems to bear out the theory that the exis tence aud multiplication of the insects are favored with dry weather. It is probable that careful search at proper stations would reveal the existence of the eggs or larva), which might then be destroyed before their campaign of destruction commenced.
